Sjerstin Vermeulen
Sjerstin de Vries-Vermeulen ( Vermeulen, born 1972/73) is a Dutch former swimmer and equestrian, who competed at four Paralympic Games. She won five swimming medals at the 1988 Summer Paralympics, and won equestrian medals at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Paralympics in the mixed team dressage event. Personal life Vermuelen is from Varik, Netherlands, and now lives in Ermelo, Netherlands. She was born with only one hand. Career Vermeulen won two silver medals and three bronze medals in L6 classification swimming events at the 1988 Summer Paralympics. She came second in the 100m breaststroke L6, 100m backstroke L6 and 400m freestyle L6 events, and third in the 100m freestyle L6 and 200m individual medley L6 races. In dressage, Vermeulen competed in the Grade IV classification. She competed in the dressage events at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. Varik
Varik is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 8 km south of Tiel. Varik was a separate municipality until 1978, when it became a part of Neerijnen. History It was first mentioned between 968 and 971 as Feldrike. The etymology is unclear. Backstroke
Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four Swimming (sport), swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. This swimming style has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It also has a different start from the other three competition swimming styles. The swimming style is similar to an ''upside down'' front crawl or freestyle. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the medley relay it is the first style swum. Trampolining
Trampolining or trampoline gymnastics is a competitive Olympic sport in which athletes perform acrobatics while bouncing on a trampoline. In competition, these can include simple jumps in the straight, pike, tuck, or straddle position to more complex combinations of forward and/or backward somersaults and twists. Scoring is based on the difficulty and on the total seconds spent in the air. Points are deducted for bad form and horizontal displacement from the center of the bed. The Equestrian Individual Freestyle Test Grade IV event at the 2008 Summer Paralympics was held in the Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Centre on 10 September. The competition was assessed by a ground jury composed of five judges placed at locations designated E, H, C, M, and B. Joop Stokkel
Joop Stokkel (born 11 April 1967 in Aalsmeerderbrug) is a Dutch Paralympian and one of the leading equestrians with a physical challenge, in the world. Stokkel suffered an accident at the age of seven causing him to lose his entire right arm and left leg. Despite the injury, he went on to start riding at the age of 15. Primarily a demonstration sport in the Netherlands prior to 1990, he participated in the first international competition in 1991, placing seventh. Stokkel earned the title of overall champion at the 1998 World Riding for Disabled Championships at Hartpury, England. Stokkel began his athletic career as a swimmer, having first represented the Netherlands at the 1988 Seoul Paralympics, winning two golds and a silver.
