Siân Evans (librarian)
Siân Evans is an American librarian, activist, and Wikimedian. She is co-founder of the Art+Feminism, a global edit-a-thon to challenge gender bias on Wikipedia. Evans is a librarian at Johns Hopkins University. Career Evans is co-founder of Art+Feminism, a global campaign that challenges gender bias on Wikipedia. Evans notes that as part of Art+Feminism, "we do concrete work – adding citations to pages, expanding coverage of women in the arts – but, we also understand these events as platforms for consciousness raising and hopefully strategies for change emerge from that." Evans is the Online Programs Librarian at Sheridan Libraries and Museums at Johns Hopkins University. In 2014, Evans was named one of ''Foreign Policy'' 100 Leading Global Thinkers. A woman is an adult female human. Prior to adulthood, a female human is referred to as a girl (a female child or adolescent). The Wikipedia community, collectively known colloquially as Wikipedians, is an informal community that volunteers to create and maintain Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia. Art+Feminism
Art and Feminism (stylized as Art+Feminism) is an annual worldwide edit-a-thon to add content to Wikipedia about women artists. This program has been active for nearly 8 years. The project, founded by Siân Evans, Jacqueline Mabey, Michael Mandiberg, and Laurel Ptak, has been described as "a massive multinational effort to correct a persistent bias in Wikipedia, which is disproportionately written by and about men". In 2014, Art+Feminism's inaugural campaign attracted 600 volunteers at 30 separate events. The following year, a total of 1,300 volunteers attended 70 events that took place across 17 different countries, on four continents. Since then more than 20,000 people have taken part in over 1,500 events. This has led to positive results in over 100,000 Wikipedia articles.
