Sixth National Government Of New Zealand
The Sixth National Government is a coalition government comprising the National Party, ACT Party and New Zealand First that has governed New Zealand since November 2023. The government is headed by Christopher Luxon, the National Party leader and prime minister. Following the 2023 general election on 14 October 2023, coalition negotiations between the three parties ended on 24 November, and the new government was sworn into office by the Governor-General on 27 November. The coalition government has agreed to a select committee with the possibility of amending the Treaty of Waitangi legislation, affirm local referendums on Māori wards, and prioritise English over te reo Māori in Government departments. Majority Government
A majority government is a government by one or more governing parties that hold an absolute majority of seats in a legislature. This is as opposed to a minority government, where the largest party in a legislature only has a plurality of seats. A government majority determines the balance of power. A majority government is usually assured of having its legislation passed and rarely if ever, has to fear being defeated in parliament, a state is also known as a working majority. In contrast, a minority government must constantly bargain for support from other parties in order to pass legislation and avoid being defeated on motions of no confidence. Tama Potaka
Tama William Potaka (born 1976) is a New Zealand politician and Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives representing the Hamilton West electorate. He is a member of the National Party and was chief executive of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki before entering Parliament. Early life and family Potaka was born in Raetihi in 1976. He has Māori ancestry through both of his parents, who were schoolteachers, and he affiliates to Ngāti Hauiti, Whanganui, Taranaki, and Ngāti Toa. He was educated at Huntley School and Te Aute College, where he was classmates with Julian Wilcox, Aidan Warren, Billy Weepu, Karl Te Nana and Alistair Toto and became dux in 1993. Todd McClay
Todd Michael McClay (born 22 November 1968) is a New Zealand politician and former ambassador. He is the Member of Parliament for Rotorua. He was previously an ambassador for the Cook Islands and Niue to the European Union. Early life McClay was born in Rotorua in 1968. Matt Doocey
Matthew Maurice Doocey (born 1972) is a New Zealand politician who was elected to the New Zealand Parliament at the 2014 general election as a representative of the New Zealand National Party. Nicole McKee
Nicole Raima McKee (born ) is a New Zealand politician who was placed third on the ACT party list, and elected to the New Zealand parliament at the 2020 general election as a representative of the ACT New Zealand. Early life and career McKee moved to Rotorua in her teens, then returned to Wellington as an adult. McKee became pregnant when she was 24, but her partner died in a car accident a week before their daughter was born. Andrew John Hoggard (born ) is a New Zealand dairy farmer and farming leader, and served as president of Federated Farmers between 2020 and 2023. Karen Louise Chhour (born ) is a New Zealand politician. She has been a member of parliament for ACT New Zealand since the 2020 general election. Early life and career Chhour is of Māori descent and belongs to the Ngāpuhi iwi. Christopher Aidan Penk (born 1980) is a New Zealand politician and Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives for the National Party. Personal life Penk was born in West Auckland.
