The Sisters of Holy Cross, (''Soeurs de Sainte-Croix'') headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada is an international Roman Catholic Church, Catholic Religious congregation, congregation of religious (Catholicism), religious sisters which traces its origins to the foundation of the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1837 in Le Mans, France by the Beatification, Blessed Basil Moreau, Father Basil Anthony-Marie Moreau, CSC. Two other congregations of sisters also have the same origins: the Marianites of Holy Cross (New Orleans, Louisiana) and the Sisters of the Holy Cross (Notre Dame, Indiana). Ignace Bourget
Ignace Bourget (October 30, 1799 – June 8, 1885) was a Canadian Roman Catholic priest who held the title of Bishop of Montreal from 1840 to 1876. Born in Lévis, Quebec, in 1799, Bourget entered the clergy at an early age, undertook several courses of religious study, and in 1837 was named co-adjutor bishop of the newly created bishopric of Montreal. Following the death of Jean-Jacques Lartigue in 1840, Bourget became Bishop of Montreal. During the 1840s, Bourget led the expansion of the Roman Catholic Church in Quebec. He encouraged the immigration of European missionary societies, including the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the Jesuits, the Society of the Sacred Heart and the Good Shepherd Sisters. Édouard-Charles Fabre
Édouard-Charles Fabre (February 28, 1827 – December 30, 1896) was Archbishop of Montreal in 1886 and of Sherbrooke and Saint-Hyacinthe in 1887. Fabre was the eldest of 11 children in an important Montreal business family. Despite the efforts of his father, Édouard-Raymond Fabre, to steer him in another direction, he began his study of philosophy in 1844 at the seminary of Saint-Sulpice at Issy-les-Moulineaux after a privileged education in Lower Canada. In 1846 Fabre finished his studies at Saint-Sulpice, visited Rome and met Pope Pius IX and returned to Montreal. He was ordained in 1850. In 1876 Fabre became the third bishop of Montreal and, in 1886, Pope Leo XIII made him Archbishop of Montreal, and the following year the dioceses of Sherbrooke and Saint-Hyacinthe. Émile Jean-Baptiste Marie Grouard O.M.I., "one of the most influential clerics in northern Alberta," was Apostolic Vicar of Athabasca. A gifted linguist, Grouard learned a number of languages of the indigenous peoples.
