"Sister Of Mercy" is a song by the British pop group Thompson Twins. It was originally included on the group's 1984 album ''Into The Gap'', though a remixed version was released as the fourth single from the album in the summer of 1984. The single peaked at #11 in the UK, spending ten weeks on the UK singles chart. The promotional music video for this single was directed by Dieter Trattmann and featured actress Frances Tomelty. The B-side of the single was a megamix of various Thompson Twins songs titled "Out Of The Gap". Background The theme of the song is domestic abuse. It was inspired by a news article about a person in France having murdered someone, but the court considered the act as a "crime of passion," and that it therefore couldn't be tried on the same basis of a regular homicidal murder. Thompson Twins
Thompson Twins were a British Pop music, pop band formed in 1977 in Sheffield. Initially a New wave music, new wave group, they switched to a more mainstream pop sound and achieved considerable popularity during the mid-1980s, scoring a string of hits in the United Kingdom, the United States, and around the world. In 1993, they changed their name to Babble (band), Babble, to reflect their change in music from pop to Dub music, dub-influenced Chill-out music, chill-out. They continued as Babble until 1996, at which point the group permanently broke up. The band's name was based on the two bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson (who are close doubles not twins) in the English language version of Hergé's comic strip ''The Adventures of Tintin''. Dieter Trattmann (b. Switzerland) is a director/editor and producer who resides in California. Life and career Dieter Trattmann was born and raised in Switzerland. In the late 1970s, he became fascinated with music and film and moved to London where he attended the London Film School. In 1983, he went to work for MGMM Productions in London, beginning his career in film by directing a commercial for MTV. In 1986, he moved to EMI/Picture Music International, where he continued his film career, specializing in music videos during the 1980s and 1990s and directing work for Donna Summer, the Thompson Twins, Cliff Richard and Placido Domingo. He worked on contracts with EMI/Capitol, Polygram, Island, Atlantic, Arista, Virgin, Chrysalis, RCA, Geffen, Sony and others. ''Into the Gap'' is the fourth studio album by British pop group Thompson Twins, released on 17 February 1984 by Arista Records. The album was recorded during 1983 at Compass Point Studios, in Nassau, Bahamas, and was produced by Alex Sadkin who had produced the band's previous studio album, ''Quick Step & Side Kick'' (1983). Despite a mixed response from critics, ''Into the Gap'' became the band's most commercially successful studio album, peaking at number one on the UK Albums Chart (for three weeks), and number 10 on the US ''Billboard'' 200. " Hold Me Now", "Doctor! Doctor!", "You Take Me Up", and "Sister of Mercy" were all released as singles in the UK with corresponding music videos.
