Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel
The Sir Walter Hotel is the oldest surviving hotel building in Raleigh, North Carolina. Constructed between 1923 and 1924 on Fayetteville Street and named after Sir Walter Raleigh, the hotel was nicknamed North Carolina's "third house of government", due to its location and being a focal point for state political activity until the 1960s. History The Capital Construction Company was formed in 1923 to build a hotel in Raleigh to attract convention traffic that had been going to Greensboro and Durham. In January 1924, the Hotel Sir Walter opened. It was the largest building in the southern portion of Raleigh's business district. The hotel became the unofficial headquarters of the North Carolina Democratic Party, at the time the dominant political force in the state. Pierce Oliver "Kidd" Brewer (May 5, 1908 – November 22, 1991) was an American football player, coach, and college athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach and athletic director at Appalachian State Teachers College—now known as Appalachian State University—from 1935 to 1938. Brewer's 1937 football squad went unbeaten and unscored upon during the regular season, outscoring their opponents 206–0. Brewer was an All-American at Duke University before coaching at Appalachian. Kidd Brewer Stadium, Appalachian State's home football venue, was named in his honor on September 3, 1988. After leaving the Mountaineers, Brewer started a sales career before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. Crabtree Valley Mall is a regional shopping mall located in Raleigh, North Carolina. At , it is the largest enclosed mall in the Research Triangle area. Crabtree Valley contains over 200 stores and is anchored by Belk and Macy's. History Crabtree Valley Mall opened in August 1972 at the intersection of US 70/NC 50 (Glenwood Avenue) and the I-440 Beltline.
