Sir Robert Steuart, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert Steuart (or Stewart), 1st Baronet of Allanbank (1643 – 1707) was a Scottish politician who represented North Berwick in the Parliament of Scotland from 1698 to 1702. Early life Steuart was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1643. He was the seventh and youngest son of Sir James Steuart of Kirkfield and Coltness (1608–1681), Lord Provost of Edinburgh, by his first wife Anne Hope. He was a younger brother of Sir James Steuart of Goodtrees, the Lord Advocate from 1692 to 1709. Career A merchant at Leith, he purchased the estate of Allanbank in Berwickshire. From 1698 to 1702, he represented North Berwick in the Parliament of Scotland. Baronetcy On 15 August 1687, he was created a Baronet of Nova Scotia, with remainder to his heirs male whatsoever. North Berwick in Haddingtonshire was a royal burgh that returned one commissioner to the Parliament of Scotland and to the Convention of Estates. John Gilmour Of Craigmillar
Sir John Gilmour of Craigmillar (1605 – 14 August 1671) was a Scottish judge and politician, who served as Lord President of the Court of Session from 1661 to 1670. He was the son of John Gilmour, Writer to the Signet, and became an advocate on 12 December 1628.Anderson, ''The Scottish Nation'' In 1641 he was appointed by Parliament to act for the Royalist Earl of Montrose, who was charged with intrigues against the Marquis of Argyll. Gilmour subsequently became associated with the Royalist party, and following the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, he was appointed Lord President of the Court of Session by the King, on 13 February 1661. The Court of Session, the supreme civil court in Scotland, had not sat for the eleven years of the Interregnum, but resumed in June that year. A commissioner was a legislator appointed or elected to represent a royal burgh or shire in the pre-Union Scottish Parliament and the associated Convention of the Estates. Member of Parliament (MP) and Deputy are equivalent terms in other countries. The Scottish Parliament (also known as the Three Estates) and the Convention of the Estates were unicameral legislatures, so commissioners sat alongside prelates (the first estate) and members of the nobility (the second estate). George Edward Cokayne
George Edward Cokayne, (29 April 1825 – 6 August 1911), was an English genealogist and long-serving herald at the College of Arms in London, who eventually rose to the rank of Clarenceux King of Arms. He wrote such authoritative and standard reference works as ''The Complete Peerage'' and ''The Complete Baronetage''. Origins Cokayne was born on 29 April 1825, with the surname Adams, being the son of William Adams by his wife the Hon. Mary Anne Cokayne, a daughter of Viscount Cullen. He was baptised George Edward Adams. On 15 August 1873, he changed his surname by Royal Licence to Cokayne. Sir Gilbert Elliot, 2nd Baronet, (of Minto) (16 April 1766) was a Scottish lawyer, politician and judge from Minto in the Scottish Borders. From 1763 until his death 3 years later, he was Lord Justice Clerk, the second most senior judge in Scotland. Early life He was the oldest son of the judge Sir Gilbert Elliot, 1st Baronet, of Minto (–1718). Elliot studied law at the University of Utrecht and was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1715. Langton, Berwickshire
Gavinton is a small settlement in the Scottish Borders area of Scotland, south-west of Duns, the former county town of Berwickshire. The hamlet sits on a minor road off the A6105 Duns to Greenlaw road at . History Gavinton is a relatively new settlement, having been established as a planned estate village in 1759 when David Gavin, the local landowner, decided to demolish the village and the church of Langton, which were situated on his estate, and rebuild them outwith the walls on Crimson Hill. The first records of the area came in the reign of David I of Scotland when Roger d'Eu, the king's retainer, was in possession of lands and church of Langton.
