Sir Robert Gooch, 11th Baronet
Colonel Sir Robert Eric Sherlock Gooch, 11th Baronet (6 May 1903 – 13 November 1978) was a British Army officer and local politician. Gooch was the son of Sir Thomas Vere Sherlock Gooch, 10th Baronet and Florence Meta Draper. He was educated at Eton College. After attending the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Gooch commissioned into the Life Guards. He saw active service during the Second World War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1941. Between November 1942 and December 1944 he served as the Commanding Officer of the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment, and from 1944 to 1946 he was Colonel of the Household Cavalry. In 1946 he served as a member of East Suffolk County Council, and on 7 July of that year he succeeded to his father's baronetcy. In 1950 he held the office of High Sheriff of Suffolk. Colonel (United Kingdom)
Colonel (Col) is a rank of the British Army and Royal Marines, ranking below brigadier, and above lieutenant colonel. British colonels are not usually field commanders; typically they serve as staff officers between field commands at battalion and brigade level. The insignia is two diamond-shaped pips (properly called "Bath Stars") below a crown. The crown has varied in the past with different monarchs; Elizabeth II's reign used St Edward's Crown. Honourable Corps Of Gentlemen At Arms
His Majesty's Body Guard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms is a bodyguard to the British Monarch. Until 17 March 1834, they were known as The Honourable Band of Gentlemen Pensioners. Formation The corps was formed as the Troop of Gentlemen in 1509 by King Henry VIII to act as a mounted escort, armed with spear and lance to protect the sovereign, in battle or elsewhere. Henry decided to have "this new and sumptuous Troop of Gentlemen composed of cadets of noble families and the highest order of gentry as his personal Body Guard or 'Nearest Guard'", cadets being the younger sons of nobles. As his Body Guard, it accompanied Henry to France in 1513 and took part in the Battle of Guinegate (better known as the Battle of the Spurs) and then at the Field of Cloth of Gold in 1520. Gooch Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Gooch, one in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Gooch Baronets of Benacre Hall The Gooch Baronetcy of Benacre Hall, in the County of Suffolk, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 4 November 1746 for William Gooch, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1727 to 1749. The second Baronet was Bishop of Bristol, Norwich then Ely. He married Mary Sherlock, daughter of William Sherlock, Dean of Saint Paul's Cathedral, London leaving a fairly substantial inheritance. Since then, Sherlock has been included by most succeeding generations as a middle name. The fourth Baronet served as High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1785. The fifth Baronet co-represented Suffolk in the House of Commons from 1806 to 1830. The sixth Baronet likewise won election as Member of Parliament for Suffolk East between 1846 and 1856.
