Sir Matthew White Ridley, 4th Baronet (9 September 1807 – 25 September 1877) was a Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He was appointed High Sheriff of Northumberland for 1841 and then served as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), member of parliament (MP) for North Northumberland (UK Parliament constituency), Northumberland North from 1859 United Kingdom general election, 1859 to 1868 United Kingdom general election, 1868. He inherited the baronetcy on the death in 1836 of his father Sir Matthew Ridley, 3rd Baronet, Matthew, and was in turn succeeded by his son Matthew Ridley, 1st Viscount Ridley, Matthew, who was later ennobled as Viscount Ridley. Charles Augustus Bennet, 6th Earl of Tankerville PC (10 January 1810 – 18 December 1899), styled Lord Ossulston between 1822 and 1859, was a British peer and Conservative politician. He served as Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms between 1866 and 1867 and as Lord Steward of the Household between 1867 and 1868. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. Matthew White Ridley, 1st Viscount Ridley, (25 July 1842 – 28 November 1904), known as Sir Matthew White Ridley, 5th Baronet, from 1877 to 1900, was a British Conservative statesman. He notably served as Home Secretary from 1895 to 1900. Background and education Ridley was born in London, the eldest son of Sir Matthew White Ridley, 4th Baronet, and his wife the Hon. Sir Matthew White Ridley, 3rd Baronet (18 April 1778 – 14 July 1836) was a politician in the United Kingdom. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1813 until his death in 1836. He inherited the baronetcy on the death in 1813 of his father Matthew, and was in turn succeeded by his eldest son Matthew. His younger son, George, also sat in Parliament for Newcastle (1856–1860).
