Sir Louis Baron, 1st Baronet
Sir Louis Bernhard Baron, 1st Baronet (19 October 1876 – 6 May 1934), was a British tobacco and cigarette manufacturer. He was the managing director of Carreras Tobacco Company, the Carreras Tobacco Company. Baron was the son of Bernhard Baron and his wife Rachel, . His father was Jewish and had emigrated from Russia to the US before settling in London, where he preceded his son as managing director of Carreras. Baron was created a baronet, of Park Street, Mayfair, Park Street in the parish of St George, Hanover Square, in the County of London, in 1930. He died in May 1934, aged 57, when the title became extinct. Family He married Elsie, daughter of Bruno Richter of New York. They had one daughter, Myrtle Baron. Elsie, Lady Baron (d. Carreras Tobacco Company
The House of Carreras was a tobacco business established in London in the nineteenth century by Don José Carreras Ferrer, a nobleman from Spain. It remained an independent company until merging with Rothmans of Pall Mall in November 1958. In 1972 the name was used as the vehicle for the merger of various European tobacco interests to form Rothmans International. History 19th century The antecedents of the Carreras business began trading in the eighteenth century (the company's products and advertising materials consistently bore the motto 'Established 1788'), and forebears of the founder’s family were Spanish apothecaries. The founder of the business was a Spanish nobleman, Don José Carreras Ferrer, who fought in the Peninsular War under the Duke of Wellington (1808–1814). Bernhard Baron
Bernhard Baron (5 December 1850 – 1 August 1929) was a tobacco manufacturer and philanthropist. He was born in Brest-Litovsk (in modern Belarus), to Jewish parents, lived in Rostov as a child, and immigrated to the United States at an early age with his father. Following work at a tobacco factory in the United States, and time spent making cigarettes by hand, he invented a cigarette-making machine. From 1890 to 1895 he was managing director of the National Cigarette Tobacco Company of New York, which he had set up with the backing of a group of financiers to challenge the powerful tobacco trusts. In 1895 he visited England to sell the patent rights to his cigarette machine. However, he was attracted by the commercial opportunities and moved to England, where he established the Baron Cigarette Machine Company Limited in Aldgate, London. Godmersham Park
Godmersham Park is a Grade I listed house in Godmersham in the English county of Kent. The house is on the edge of the North Downs between Ashford and Canterbury. It has associations with the writer Jane Austen, and is depicted on the new Bank of England £10 note issued in 2017. It is now home to the Association of British Dispensing Opticians. Description Godmersham Park is a two-storey house in the Palladian style. Built of red brick, the main block is of seven bays, the central three being recessed. The north front is of Thomas May's time, while the south facade was constructed by Walter Sarel for the Trittons in the 1930s, in a complementary style. During this reconstruction, Sarel also turned the bricks on the north front, which had been painted in the 19th century, to restore the original 18th century appearance. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. In the United Kingdom, smoking is legally permitted, with certain conditions set from laws enacted separately in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is illegal to smoke tobacco in enclosed public places, such as restaurants, shops or pubs, under the Health Act 2006 for England and Wales, the Smoking (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 for Northern Ireland and the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005 for Scotland. It is also illegal to smoke in a car if one is transporting people under 18 or if a vehicle is being used for work purposes. Smoking is prevalent among a sizeable, but continuously reducing minority of the population. It has been argued that smoking puts considerable strain upon the NHS due to the health problems which can be directly linked with smoking.
