Sir John Sinclair, 3rd Baronet
Sir John George Tollemache Sinclair, 3rd Baronet (8 November 1825 – 30 September 1912) was a Scottish landowner and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1869 to 1885. Early life Born in Edinburgh in 1825, he was the son of Sir George Sinclair, 2nd Baronet, and Lady Catherine Camilla Tollemache, daughter of William Talmash, Lord Huntingtower. He was a Page of Honour for Queen Adelaide. Sinclair was educated at Cheam School and the University of Durham. Career He served as a lieutenant in the Scots Fusilier Guards. In 1861 he was made Vice-Lieutenant for Caithness. In 1868 he succeeded his father to the baronetcy. Sinclair was elected Member of Parliament for Caithness in 1869 and held the seat until 1885. His majority of 13 over the Conservative candidate at the 1874 election is one of the smallest on record. Carlo Pellegrini (caricaturist)
Carlo Pellegrini (25 March 1839 – 22 January 1889), who did much of his work under the pseudonym of Ape, was an Italian artist who served from 1869 to 1889 as a caricaturist for '' Vanity Fair'' magazine, a leading journal of London society. He was born in Capua, then in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. His father came from an ancient land-owning family, while his mother was allegedly descended from the Medici. His work for the magazine made his reputation and he became its most influential artist. Early life Pellegrini was educated at the Collegio dei Barnabiti, and then at Sant'Antonio in Maddaloni, near Naples. As a young man he caricatured Neapolitan society, modelling his portraits on those of Melchiorre Delfico and Daumier and other French and British artists of the period. Archibald Sinclair, 1st Viscount Thurso
Archibald Henry Macdonald Sinclair, 1st Viscount Thurso, (22 October 1890 – 15 June 1970), known as Sir Archibald Sinclair between 1912 and 1952, and often as Archie Sinclair, was a British politician and leader of the Liberal Party. Background and education Sinclair was born in 1890 in Caithness, Scotland. Sinclair was the son of a Scottish father, Clarence Granville Sinclair, and his American wife Mabel Sands, daughter of Mahlon Day Sands, and half-sister of Ethel Sands. His mother died shortly after his birth, and his father in 1895. He was brought up in families including those of his paternal grandfather Sir Tollemache Sinclair, 3rd Baronet, his uncle William Macdonald Sinclair, and Owen Williams, married to his aunt Nina. Sinclair Baronets
There have been seven baronetcies created for persons with the surname Sinclair, six in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain. Four of the creations are extant as of 2008. The Sinclair Baronetcy, of Dunbeath in the County of Caithness, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 3 January 1631 for John Sinclair. The title became extinct on his death in circa 1652. The Sinclair Baronetcy, of Canisbay in the County of Caithness, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 2 June 1631 for James Sinclair, a great-grandson of the fourth Earl of Caithness. Ethel Sands
Ethel Sands (6 July 1873 – 19 March 1962) was an American-born artist and hostess who lived in England from childhood. She studied art in Paris, where she met her life partner Anna Hope Hudson (Nan). Her works were generally still lifes and interiors, often of Château d'Auppegard that she shared with Hudson. Sands was a Fitzroy Street Group and London Group member. Her works are in London's National Portrait Gallery and other public collections. In 1916 she was made a British citizen. Although a major art patron and an artist, she is most remembered as a hostess for the cultural elite, including Henry James, Virginia Woolf, Roger Fry and Augustus John. Mahlon Day Sands (March 1, 1842 - May 7, 1888) was an American merchant. Early life Sands was born on March 1, 1842, in New York City. He was a son of merchant Abraham B. Sands (1815–1861) and Sarah A. ( Day) Sands (1816–1906). His brothers were Philip Justice Sands and Henry Mankin Sands. His sister, Katherine Sands, was the wife of Edwin Lawrence Godkin.
