Sir John Leslie, 4th Baronet
Captain Sir John Norman Ide Leslie, 4th Baronet (6 December 1916 – 18 April 2016), known locally as Jack Leslie, was the eldest son of Sir John Randolph Leslie, 3rd Baronet (known as Shane Leslie), and Marjorie Ide. He became the fourth baronet when his father died in 1971. Biography Educated at Downside School and Magdalene College, Cambridge, Leslie never married or had children. During World War II, he served as an officer in the Irish Guards during the Battle of France before being captured at Boulogne-sur-Mer. He then spent five years in POW camps. After the war, he moved to New York City and later travelled around Europe, settling in Rome. At the age of 78 he returned to his family's homestead, Castle Leslie and travelled to Ibiza for his 85th birthday in 2001. There have been four baronetcies created for persons with the surname Leslie, one in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia, one in the Baronetage of Ireland, one in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Three of the creations are extant as of 2010. The Leslie Baronetcy, of Wardis and Findrassie in the County of Moray, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 1 September 1625 for John Leslie, with remainder to his heirs male whatsoever. He was a descendant of the Leslies of Balquhain, from whom the Leslie Counts of the Holy Roman Empire are also descended (see Clan Leslie). On the death of the second Baronet in 1645, the title reverted to his uncle, William Leslie. However, he declined to assume the title as he would not also inherit the Wardis estate. William King (Royal Navy Officer)
Commander William Donald Aelian King, DSO & Bar, DSC (23 June 1910 – 21 September 2012) was a British naval officer, yachtsman and author. He was the oldest participant in the first solo non-stop, around-the-world yacht race, the ''Sunday Times'' Golden Globe Race, and the only person to command a British submarine on both the first and last days of World War II. Brought up by his mother and grandmother, King went to the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. He was first assigned to the battleship , and later became commanding officer of the submarine . He commanded three separate RN submarines in World War II, and was promoted to commander and awarded seven medals during the war. King not only survived World War II, but succeeded in a singlehanded circumnavigation in 1973 on his third attempt. Henry Clay Ide (September 18, 1844 – June 13, 1921) was a U.S. judge, colonial commissioner, ambassador, and Governor-General of the Philippines. Biography Early life, States Attorney, Senator, and Presidential Commissioner to Samoa Ide was born in Barnet, Vermont, on September 18, 1844, a son of Jacob and Lodoiska (Knights) Ide. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1866, where he was named valedictorian. He studied law, first with Benjamin H. Steele, and later with Jonathan Ross, and was admitted to the bar in 1870. Leonard Walter Jerome (November 3, 1817 – March 3, 1891) was an American financier in Brooklyn, New York, and the maternal grandfather of Winston Churchill. Early life Leonard Jerome was born in Pompey in Onondaga County, New York, on November 3, 1817.
