Sir John Chichester, 1st Baronet
Sir John Chichester, 1st Baronet (23 April 1623 – 4 November 1667) lord of the manor of Raleigh in the parish of Pilton in Devon, was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1661 to 1667. Origins He was the son and heir of Sir Robert Chichester (d.1627), K.B., of Raleigh, Devon by his second wife Mary Hill, a daughter of Robert Hill (d.1637) of Shilston in the parish of Modbury in Devon. Career He succeeded to Raleigh on the death of his father on 24 April 1627. He was created a baronet on 4 August 1641. In 1661 Chichester was elected a Member of Parliament for Barnstaple (adjacent to Raleigh) in the Cavalier Parliament and sat until his death in 1667 at the age of about 44. Heraldic visitations were tours of inspection undertaken by Kings of Arms (or alternatively by heralds, or junior officers of arms, acting as their deputies) throughout England, Wales and Ireland. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. Nicholas Dennys
Nicholas Dennys (13 November 1616 – 31 May 1692) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1660 to 1678. Dennys was the son Thomas Dennys, of Ilfracombe, Devon. He matriculated at Pembroke College, Oxford on 11 July 1634, aged 18. He was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1646. In 1660, Dennys was elected Member of Parliament for Barnstaple in the Convention Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Barnstaple for the Cavalier Parliament The Cavalier Parliament of England lasted from 8 May 1661 until 24 January 1679. History Of Parliament
The History of Parliament is a project to write a complete history of the United Kingdom Parliament and its predecessors, the Parliament of Great Britain and the Parliament of England. The history will principally consist of a prosopography, in which the history of an institution is told through the individual biographies of its members. After various amateur efforts the project was formally launched in 1940 and since 1951 has been funded by the Treasury. As of 2019, the volumes covering the House of Commons for the periods 1386–1421, 1509–1629, and 1660–1832 have been completed and published (in 41 separate volumes containing over 20 million words); and the first five volumes covering the House of Lords from 1660-1715 have been published, with further work on the Commons and the Lords ongoing.
