Sir James Pender, 1st Baronet (28 September 1841 – 20 May 1921) was a British businessman, yachtsman and Conservative Party politician. He sat in the House of Commons from 1895 to 1900. Early life Pender was the eldest son from Sir John Pender's first marriage to Marion Cairn. His father was the founder of the Eastern Telegraph Company, which later became Cable & Wireless. His younger half-brother was Sir John Denison-Pender, father of John Denison-Pender, 1st Baron Pender. Career He was a Director of Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company 'Telcon' taken over decades later by British Insulated Callender's Cables, Director Globe Telegraph Trust, Director Direct United States Cable Company Ltd, Director Eastman Kodak New Jersey, and the Chairman of Eastman Kodak (UK) from 1898 until 1913. Royal Yacht Squadron
The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) is a British yacht club. Its clubhouse is Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. Member yachts are given the suffix RYS to their names, and are permitted (with the appropriate warrant) to wear the White Ensign of the Royal Navy rather than the merchant Red Ensign worn by the majority of other UK registered vessels. Kieler Yacht-Club (''Kiel Yacht Club'') is one of the oldest yacht clubs in Germany. It is located in the harbor city of Kiel. This club is well known for some of the yacht racing events it organizes. The main one is the yearly Kieler Woche (Kiel Week), which is perhaps the biggest sailing event in the world. George Lennox Watson (30 October 1851 – 12 November 1904) was a Scottish naval architect. Born in Glasgow, son of Thomas Lennox Watson, a doctor at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and grandson of Sir Timothy Burstall, engineer and entrant at the 1829 Rainhill Trials. Early life As a young boy in the late 1850s Watson often spent holidays at Inverkip on the Firth of Clyde, where through his friendship the local skipper William Mackie he developed his passion for yachts and resolved to make naval architecture his living. His Majesty's Yacht ''Britannia'' was a gaff-rigged cutter built in 1893 for RYS Commodore Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. She served both himself and his son King George V with a long racing career. Design ''Britannia'' was ordered in 1892 by the Prince of Wales and designed by George Lennox Watson. She was a near sister ship to the Watson-designed which challenged for the 1893 America's Cup. Details of the commission were arranged on the Prince’s behalf by William Jamieson who represented him and liaised closely with Watson.
