Sir James Colquhoun, 3rd Baronet, Of Luss
Sir James Colquhoun, 3rd Baronet, of Luss (28 September 1774 – 3 February 1836) was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dunbartonshire (UK Parliament constituency), Dumbartonshire from 1799 to 1806. Colquhoun was a Scottish aristocratic major in 1799 when he married the writer Janet Colquhoun, Janet Sinclair. He did not support her religious zeal. He was the heir to an estate in Dunbartonshire. It has been proposed that Colquhoun and his wife were the basis for the characters of Rabina and George Colwan in Hogg's ''The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner''. A member of parliament (MP) is the representative in parliament of the people who live in their electoral district. In many countries with bicameral parliaments, this term refers only to members of the lower house since upper house members often have a different title. Colquhoun Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Colquhoun ("Cohoon"), one in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia (1625) and one in the Baronetage of Great Britain (1786). The second baronetcy in 1786 was created to rectify confusion over the first. However, a third branch of the family, the Colquhouns of Tillyquhoun, also continued to assert themselves as baronets until their extinction in 1838.
