Sir Jacob Astley, 1st Baronet
Sir Jacob Astley, 1st Baronet (ca. 163917 August 1729) of Melton Constable Hall, Norfolk was an England, English Tory politician and baronet. Background He was the oldest son of Edward Astley and his wife Elizabeth Astley, daughter of his uncle Jacob Astley, 1st Baron Astley of Reading. Astley was educated first at Norwich School, then King's College, Cambridge, and finally Christ Church, Oxford, where he matriculated on 19 June 1659. On 7 September of the same year on the death of his paternal uncle Sir Isaac Astley, 1st Baronet, he inherited the estates of Hillmorton, Hill Morton, Warwickshire and Melton Constable, and in 1688 the Maidstone, Kent estates of his cousin Jacob Astley, 3rd Baron Astley of Reading. In 1664 he commenced the building of the present Melton Constable Hall. He sold the Kent estate in 1720. Melton Constable Hall
Melton Constable Hall is a large (Grade I listed) country house in the parish of Melton Constable, Norfolk, England designed in the Christopher Wren style and built between 1664 and 1670 for the Astley family who owned the estate from 1235 until 1948. The core of the house is Elizabethan. Hall Melton Constable Hall is regarded as the finest specimen of the Christopher Wren style of house. The house was re-modelled and extended by Sir Jacob Astley between 1664 and 1670, replacing an earlier house dating from c.1500. It has some fine plaster ceilings dated 1687, probably fashioned by Edward Goudge. The house is constructed of brick with slate and copper roofs. The main range has a nine bay frontage, with 7-bay extensions to the east and north. The main range is Grade I listed and the north wing Grade II* listed. Sir Philip Wodehouse, 3rd Baronet
Sir Philip Wodehouse, 3rd Baronet (24 July 1608 – 6 May 1681) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1654 and 1660. Wodehouse was the son of Sir Thomas Wodehouse, 2nd Baronet, and Blanche, daughter of John Carey, 3rd Baron Hunsdon. In 1654, he was elected Member of Parliament for Norfolk in the First Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Norfolk in 1656 for the Second Protectorate Parliament. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father on 18 March 1658. In 1660 he was elected MP for Thetford in the Convention Parliament. Wodehouse married Lucy, daughter of Sir Thomas Cotton, 2nd Baronet. His son Thomas predeceased him. He died in May 1681, aged 72, and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his grandson, John. Sir Edmund Bacon, 6th Baronet (c. 1680 or 1686 – 30 April 1755), of Garboldisham, Norfolk, was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1710 and 1741. Life Bacon was the eldest son of Sir Robert Bacon, 5th Baronet and his wife Elizabeth Chandler, daughter of Daniel Chandler. He was admitted at Pembroke College, Cambridge on 5 May 1697. Bacon succeeded his father as baronet in 1704. In 1710, Bacon stood as Member of Parliament (MP) for Thetford, a seat he held until 1713. Sir John Wodehouse, 4th Baronet
Sir John Wodehouse, 4th Baronet (23 March 1669 – 6 August 1754), was a British Tory Member of Parliament. A member of an old Norfolk family, Wodehouse succeeded his grandfather Sir Philip Wodehouse, 3rd Baronet, in the baronetcy on 6 May 1681. He was the son of Thomas Wodehouse and Anne Airmine, daughter and co-heiress of Sir William Airmine, 2nd Baronet. In 1695 he was elected to the House of Commons for Thetford, a seat he held until 1698 and again from 1701 to 1702 and 1705 to 1708. He also represented Norfolk from 1710 to 1713. At some point he was the Recorder of Thetford. Wodehouse married Elizabeth Benson in 1700. After her early death he married Mary Fermor, daughter of William Fermor, 1st Baron Leominster. He died in August 1754, aged 85, and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his son from his second marriage, Armine - another son, William, had predeceased him. Ashe Windham
Ashe Windham (17 February 1673 – 4 April 1749), of Felbrigg, Norfolk, was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1708 to 1710. Life Windham was the eldest son of William Windham of Felbrigg (died 1689) and his wife Katherine Ashe, daughter of Sir Joseph Ashe, 1st Baronet of Twickenham. His maternal uncle was Sir James Ashe, 2nd Baronet and his brothers were William Windham and Joseph Windham Ashe. The Windham family had had a seat at Felbrigg Hall since the mid-15th century. Whilst at Eton College he succeeded his father in 1689. After attending King's College, Cambridge, he took a grand tour round Italy between 1693 and 1696. Roger Townshend (after 1675 – 22 May 1709) was a British Army officer and Whig politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons between 1701 and 1709. Early life Townshend was the son of Horatio Townshend, 1st Viscount Townshend, of Raynham Hall, and his second wife Mary Ashe, daughter of Sir Joseph Ashe, 1st Baronet, of Twickenham, Middlesex. He was educated at Eton College from about 1688 to 1695 and matriculated from King's College, Cambridge at Easter 1695. Career Townshend was returned as Member of Parliament for Norfolk at the two general elections of 1701 on the interest of his elder brother Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend. Sir Henry Hobart, 4th Baronet (1657–1698) was an English Whig politician and baronet. Family Henry Hobart was the eldest son to Sir John Hobart, 3rd Baronet and his first wife Mary Hampden, daughter to John Hampden. He was knighted at Blickling by King Charles II of England in 1671 and succeeded his father as baronet in 1683. Hobart was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. On 9 July 1684, he married Elizabeth Maynard, eldest daughter to Sir Joseph Maynard, and had by her a son and three daughters. Sir William Cook, 2nd Baronet (c. 1630 – January 1708), of Broome Hall in Norfolk, was a member of the East Anglian gentry and a Tory Member of Parliament. Origins He was only son and heir of Sir William Cook, 1st Baronet (died 1681), of Broome Hall, by his first wife Mary Astley, a daughter of Thomas Astley of Melton Constable in Norfolk. His grandfather had acquired Broome Hall by marriage in 1603. The Cooke family had been seated at Linstead in Suffolk since the 15th century. Sir Thomas Hare, 2nd Baronet (c. 1658 - 1 January 1693) was a member of the East Anglian gentry and a Member of the Parliament of England. Life He was the eldest son of Sir Ralph Hare, 1st Baronet (died 1672) by his first wife - her name is unknown. He attended Caius College, Cambridge from 1672, the year in which he also succeeded his father in the baronetcy. His guardian was Sir Horatio Townshend, but his tutor at Cambridge was Dr Robert Brady. He headed his tenants at the county election in February 1679 but was still too young to replace Sir Christopher Calthorpe as MP for Norfolk in 1679.
