Sir Humphrey Clarke, 5th Baronet
Sir Humphrey Orme Clarke, 5th Baronet (6 July 1906, in London, United Kingdom – 22 January 1973, in Bibury, Gloucestershire), was the son of Sir Orme Bigland Clarke, 4th Baronet and Elfrida Roosevelt. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He was Captain of the Oppidans at Eton College. He married secondly (1 September 1938) Elisabeth Irene Cook Clarke, daughter of Dr. William Alexander Cook, who was the mother of Humphrey's heir: Sir Toby Clarke, 6th Baronet. He died on 22 January 1973 at the age of 66. Sir Humphrey was with the British Embassy in Washington between 1941 and 1944. He was with the Foreign Office between 1944 and 1946. He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Clarke, of Dunham Lodge, co. Norfolk (UK, 1831) on 31 March 1949. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. Ferris Greenslet
Ferris Lowell Greenslet (June 30, 1875 in Glens Falls, New York – November 19, 1959 in Boston) was an American editor and writer. Biography Greenslet graduated from Wesleyan University in 1897, and earned both an M.S. and the Ph.D. by Columbia University in 1900. In 1901 he moved to Boston, where after working at the Boston Public Library and the "Boston Advertiser", he became an associate editor of the ''Atlantic Monthly'', 1902–07. In 1910, he became a literary advisor and director of the Houghton Mifflin Co. publishing firm, continuing that employment for fifty-two years. Ferris Greenslet wrote several biographies. He also wrote a collection of reminiscences, ''Under the Bridge'' published in 1943. Lowell Family
The Lowell family is one of the Boston Brahmin families of New England, known for both intellectual and commercial achievements. The family had emigrated to Boston from England in 1639, led by the patriarch Percival Lowle (1571–1665). The surname was spelt in many ways until it was standardised as Lowell from about 1721, apparently by the Rev. John Lowell. It was a later John Lowell (1743–1802) from whom the famous dynasty was descended. Background The Lowells originally settled on the North Shore at Cape Ann after they arrived in Boston on June 23, 1639. Augustus Lowell (January 15, 1830 – June 22, 1900) was a wealthy Massachusetts industrialist, philanthropist, horticulturist, and civic leader. A member of the Brahmin Lowell family, he was born in Boston to John Amory Lowell and his second wife Elizabeth Cabot Putnam. His great-grandfather, John Lowell, was among the first Judges for the newly created federal courts, appointed by Presidents George Washington and John Adams.
