Sir Henry Craik, 1st Baronet
Sir Henry Craik, 1st Baronet, (18 October 1846 – 16 March 1927) was a Scottish Unionist politician. He was appointed as a junior examiner of the Committee of Council on Education in 1871 and promoted, in 1878, to the position of Senior examiner until 1885. In this year Scotland got an independent Committee of Council on Education known as the Scotch Education Department. Craik was appointed as its secretary, a post he held from 1885 to 1904.Supplement to the London Gazette Issue 33119 published on 29 December 1925. Page 2 of 12 In October 1901 he received a degree in law (LL.D.) from the University of St Andrews. Sir Henry Craik, 3rd Baronet
Sir Henry Duffield Craik, 3rd Baronet, KCSI (2 January 1876 – 27 March 1955) was a member of the Indian Civil Service during the British Raj. He was born in Kensington, London the son of Sir Henry Craik, 1st Baronet. He was educated at Eton College and Pembroke College, Oxford. He began his career in the Indian Civil Service as a settlement officer in the Punjab in 1899. He served as Chief Secretary of the Punjab between 1922 and 1927 and was made Commissioner in 1927. He succeeded his brother George to the Craik baronetcy in 1929. He became a member of the Punjab Executive Council in 1934, and that same year was appointed to the Viceroy's Executive Council. Edward Alfred Goulding, 1st Baron Wargrave (5 November 1862 – 17 July 1936), known as Sir Edward Goulding, Bt, between 1915 and 1922, was a British barrister, businessman and Conservative Party politician. John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir (; 26 August 1875 – 11 February 1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation. After a brief legal career, Buchan simultaneously began his writing career and his political and diplomatic careers, serving as a private secretary to the administrator of various colonies in southern Africa. He eventually wrote propaganda for the British war effort during the First World War. He was elected Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities in 1927, but he spent most of his time on his writing career, notably writing '' The Thirty-Nine Steps'' and other adventure fiction. Sir George Andreas Berry LLD, FRSE, FRCSEd (6 October 1853 – 18 June 1940) was a Scottish ophthalmic surgeon who acquired a reputation as a leading authority on ophthalmology, not only in the United Kingdom but also in the United States and continental Europe. His standing in the profession was largely the result of his textbooks of ophthalmology which were widely used in his home country and abroad. His working career was spent at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and when he retired from clinical practice in 1905 he became involved in medical and national politics. He was surgeon-oculist in Scotland to King George V and then to King Edward VII and was president of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh from 1910 to 1912. He was knighted in 1916. Dugald McCoig Cowan (17 October 1865 – 30 December 1933 ) was a Scottish educationalist and Liberal politician. Family and education Cowan was born in Maryhill, Glasgow the son of John and Christina Cowan. He was educated at Glasgow Free Church Training College and Glasgow University. He held MA and LL.B degrees. He never married. Career Cowan was a schoolteacher and an expert on the subject of education. The 1927 Combined Scottish Universities by-election was a by-election held from 26 to 29 April 1927 for the Combined Scottish Universities, a university constituency of the British House of Commons. Vacancy The seat had become vacant on 16 March 1927 when the Unionist Member of Parliament (MP) Sir Henry Craik, Bt. had died, aged 80. He had held the seat since its creation for the 1918 general election, having previously been MP for Glasgow and Aberdeen Universities. Candidates Two candidates contested the by-election. John Buchan, the novelist, of the Unionist Party and Hugh Guthrie of the Labour Party, who had contested Glasgow Camlachie at the 1918 general election.
