Sir Henry Cobham
Sir Henry Cobham (1537–1592) was an English diplomat. Life The fifth son of George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham, he was always known as, and signed himself, Henry Cobham. He went to Spain with Sir Thomas Chaloner the elder who was accredited as ambassador resident at Madrid in 1561, returning to England the same year with despatches. In 1567 he carried letters from Elizabeth I to Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor and the Archduke Charles at Vienna, when the queen hoped to reopen the negotiations for her marriage with the archduke, and returned with a negative answer. In 1570 Cobham was sent to Antwerp, ostensibly on a mission of courtesy, but really to ascertain the destination of the fleet which the Duke of Alva was then equipping. He went on to Speyer, where he had audience of the Emperor (17 September), and went via Paris to Spain, accredited to Philip II as an envoy extraordinary. George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham
George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham (29 September 1558) KG, lord of the Manor of Cobham, Kent and of Cooling Castle, Kent, was an English peer, soldier and magnate, who participated in the political turmoil following the death of King Henry VIII. Origins He was the eldest surviving son of Thomas Brooke, 8th Baron Cobham by his first wife Dorothy Heydon, a daughter of Sir Henry Heydon and Anne Boleyn. His paternal grandparents were John Brooke, 7th Baron Cobham and Margaret Neville, a daughter of Edward Neville, 3rd Baron Bergavenny and Katherine Howard. John Brooke, 1st Baron Cobham
John Brooke, 1st Baron Cobham (15 August 1575 - 1660) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England, House of Commons at various times between 1614 and 1643. He supported the Cavaliers, Royalist cause in the English Civil War. Brooke was the son of Henry Cobham (diplomat), Hon. Henry Brooke and his wife Anne Sutton, daughter of Sir Henry Sutton of Nottinghamshire; his father was the fifth son of George Brooke, 9th Baron Cobham. In 1601 Brooke was in Paris learning French and in 1610 was journeying by sea and put into a port in Portugal. He was knighted in January 1612. In 1614, he was elected Member of Parliament for Gatton (UK Parliament constituency), Gatton. He was elected MP for Oxford (UK Parliament constituency), Oxford in 1621 and MP for Great Bedwyn (UK Parliament constituency), Great Bedwyn in 1625. Walter Haddon LL.D. (1515–1572) was an English civil lawyer, much involved in church and university affairs under Edward VI, Queen Mary, and Elizabeth I.
