Sir Edmund Turton, 1st Baronet
Sir Edmund Russborough Turton, 1st Baronet, JP, DL (1 November 1857 – 8 May 1929) was a British Conservative Party politician. Life He was the eldest child of Edmund Henry Turton of the 3rd Dragoon Guards and his wife Lady Cecilia Mary Leeson, 2nd daughter of Joseph Leeson, 4th Earl of Milltown. He was educated at Eton College, and matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford in 1876. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1882. Turton was an unsuccessful candidate in the Richmond division of the North Riding of Yorkshire at the 1892 and 1895 elections. He finally entered the House of Commons twenty years later, in 1915, when he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Thirsk & Malton division. His predecessor had inherited a peerage, and Turton was returned unopposed at the resulting by-election. Robin Turton, Baron Tranmire
Robert Hugh Turton, Baron Tranmire, (8 August 1903 – 17 January 1994) was a British Conservative Party politician. Biography The son of Major R B Turton of Kildale Hall, Kildale, North Riding of Yorkshire, Turton was educated at Eton College and at Balliol College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1926. Turton joined the 4th Battalion of the Green Howards at the outbreak of World War II and served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General 50th (N) Division, AAG GHQ MEF. He was awarded the Military Cross in 1942. Parliamentary career At the 1929 general election, Turton was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Thirsk and Malton, a seat which he held continuously until his retirement from the House of Commons at the February 1974 general election. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. Turton Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Turton, one in the Baronetage of Great Britain and one in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Both creations are extinct. The Turton Baronetcy, of Starborough Castle in the County of Surrey, was created in the Baronetage of Great Britain on 13 May 1796 for Thomas Turton, later Member of Parliament for Southwark. The title became extinct on the death of the second Baronet in 1854. The Turton Baronetcy, of Upsall in the North Riding of the County of York, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 2 February 1926 for Edward Turton, Member of Parliament for Thirsk and Malton. Lieutenant-Colonel Charles William Reginald Duncombe, 2nd Earl of Feversham (8 May 1879 – 15 September 1916), known as Viscount Helmsley from 1881 to 1915, was a British Conservative Party politician and soldier. Origins Feversham was the son of William Duncombe, Viscount Helmsley, elder son of William Duncombe, 1st Earl of Feversham. 1915 Thirsk And Malton By-election
The 1915 Thirsk and Malton by-election was a parliamentary by-election held on 12 February 1915 for the British House of Commons constituency of Thirsk and Malton in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The seat had become vacant when the sitting Conservative Member of Parliament Viscount Helmsley succeeded to the peerage as the 2nd Earl of Feversham. He had held the seat since the 1906 general election. The Conservative candidate, 57-year-old Edmund Turton, was returned unopposed and held the seat until his death at the age of 71, three weeks before the 1929 general election. This was the only by-election held in the Thirsk & Malton constituency, which was created in 1885 and abolished in 1983. However, at the 2010 general election, the death of a candidate forced the parliamentary election in the current Thirsk & Malton constituency to be delayed, so that it was held three weeks later than in every other constituency. Upsall
Upsall is a hamlet in and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately four miles north-east of Thirsk. Upsall is part of the Upsall and Roxby estates owned by the Turton family. The population of the civil parish was estimated at 60 in 2014. History The village is mentioned in two entries of the ''Domesday Book'' as ''Upsale'' in the ''Yarlestre'' hundred. Lands at the time of the Norman invasion were in the possession of ''Earl Waltheof'', but soon passed to the Crown from whence it was granted to '' Count Robert of Mortain''. Some of the land was held for him by ''Richard of Soudeval''. The lands passed to Robert de Mowbray, for whom the local Upsall family held the manor until 1327 when they were sold to Geoffrey Scrope. For a short while, the estates were Crown property before being granted to John Farnham in 1577. Thereafter, the lands passed through the Constable family to the Turtons in 1768.
