Sir Clive Whitmore
Sir Clive Anthony Whitmore (born 18 January 1935) is a former British senior civil servant. Whitmore was educated at Sutton Grammar School in Surrey and Christ's College, Cambridge. Whitmore served as Principal Private Secretary to Margaret Thatcher from 1979 to 1982. After that, he was appointed as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and served until 1988. From 1988 to 1994, he was Permanent Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office. Whitmore was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in the 1983 New Year Honours and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 1983 Birthday Honours. Order Of The Bath
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I of Great Britain, George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved Bathing#Medieval and early-modern Europe, bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Order (honour), Military Order". Richard Thomas James Wilson, Baron Wilson of Dinton, (born 11 October 1942) is a crossbench member of the British House of Lords and former Cabinet Secretary. Career Richard Wilson was born in Glamorgan. He was educated at Radley College (1956–60 and where he much later chaired the College Council (the governing body)) and Clare College, Cambridge (1961–65), where he was awarded the degree of Master of Laws (LLM). He was called to the Bar but, rather than practice, entered the Civil Service as an assistant principal in the Board of Trade in 1966. Sir Brian Crossland Cubbon GCB (9 April 1928 – 20 May 2015) was a British senior civil servant and a member of the Charter Compliance Panel of the Press Complaints Commission. Biography Cubbon was born in Oswaldtwisle, Lancashire on 9 April 1928. His father, Edward Moore Cubbon was a primary school teacher and his mother was Anita Jane, née Crossland. Cubbon was educated at Bury Grammar School under a scholarship and went on to study Classics at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1949. He spent a while in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for national service. Sir Michael Edward Quinlan, GCB (11 August 1930 – 26 February 2009) was a former British defence strategist and former Permanent Under-Secretary of State for Defence, who wrote and lectured on defence and matters of international security, especially nuclear weapon policies and doctrine, and also on concepts of 'Just War' and related ethical issues. Early life Quinlan was born on 11 August 1930 in Hampton, Middlesex, England to Gerald and Roseanne Quinlan. He was educated at Wimbledon College, the Jesuit boys' high school. Sir Frank Cooper, (2 December 1922 – 26 January 2002) was a British civil servant. He was Permanent Under-Secretary of State for the Northern Ireland Office and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence. Biography Cooper was born in Droylsden, Manchester, the younger child of Valentine Holland Cooper, a commercial traveller, and later a manager for a chocolate making firm, and Wynnefred Louisa, ''née'' Gardner, a teacher. His sister was the social worker Joan Davies Cooper. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School, before beginning training as an accountant in 1939. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1941 and was commissioned in 1942. After pilot training in the United States, he flew Spitfires in the Italian campaign. In 1944, he was shot down and was posted missing. Captured by German troops, he managed to escape and rejoined his unit with the help of Italian partisans.
