Sir Arthur Northcote, 2nd Baronet
Sir Arthur Northcote, 2nd Baronet (1628–1688) was a baronet from Devon, England. He lived at Hayne in the parish of Newton St Cyres, Devon, where the mansion house has since been demolished; and also at King's Nympton, Devon, a manor that he purchased from Sir Hugh Pollard, 2nd Baronet, his father's first cousin, and where he was buried. The family of Northcote originated in Devon at the Domesday Book manor of Northcote in the parish of East Down in North Devon. The Heraldic Visitations of Devon lists the founder of the family as ''Galfridus de Northcote, Miles'' ("knight"), living in 1103. In the 16th century the family made its fortune as cloth merchants at Crediton. Sir Arthur was the son and heir of Sir John Northcote, 1st Baronet (1600–1676), MP, of Hayne in the parish of Newton St Cyres, Devon, by his wife Grace Halswell. A baronet ( or ; abbreviated Bart or Bt) or the female equivalent, a baronetess (, , or ; abbreviation Btss), is the holder of a baronetcy, a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown. The title of baronet is mentioned as early as the 14th century, however in its current usage was created by James I of England in 1611 as a means of raising funds for the crown. Godolphin Estate
The Godolphin Estate is a National Trust property situated in Godolphin Cross, north-west of Helston in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The house is a Grade I listed building. History The Estate is the former seat of the Dukes of Leeds and the Earls of Godolphin. It contains a Grade I listed Tudor/Stuart mansion, complete with early formal gardens (dating from circa 1500) and Elizabethan stables (circa 1600). The present house is remnant of a larger mansion. From 1786 it was owned by the Dukes of Leeds who never lived there. In 1920 the 10th Duke of Leeds sold it to the sitting tenant Peter Quintrell Treloar. After Treloar died in 1922, the following year his wife sold it to James Penna an agricultural engineer. James Penna died in 1926 and his son James Henry Penna inherited the house and estate and lived there until his death in 1935. In 1935 it was sold to C.B. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements.
