Sione Laumanuʻuli Luani
Lord Luani (18 June 1959 – 12 May 2010), born Sione Laumanuʻuli Luani, was a Tongan nobleman, Member of Parliament, and the Governor of Vavaʻu. Education The son of MP Tongaleva Luani, Luani attended Newington College in Australia between 1972 and 1977, playing in the First XV Rugby Union team in his final two years of school. He was selected for NSW schoolboy rugby union team that won the 1977 National Title at TG Millner Field. In 1978 he attended Ohlone College, Fremont, California. Luani received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley after studying there from 1979 until 1982. In 1999 he was awarded a Diploma in Public Sector Management from Massey University in New Zealand. Tongans
Tongans, a Polynesian group, represent more than 98% of the inhabitants of Tonga. The rest are European (the majority are British), mixed European, and other Pacific Islanders. There also are several hundred Chinese. Almost two-thirds of the population live on its main island, Tongatapu. Although an increasing number of Tongans have moved into the only urban and commercial center, Nukualofa, where European and indigenous cultural and living patterns have blended, village life and kinship ties continue to be important throughout the country. Prime Minister Of Tonga
The prime minister of Tonga (historically referred to as the premier) is the country's head of government. Tonga is a monarchy with the king, currently Tupou VI, former prime minister, as head of state. The current prime minister is Siaosi Sovaleni, who was elected on 15 December 2021 and appointed on 27 December 2021. Sovaleni was elected with 16 votes. The office of prime minister was established by the Constitution of 1875, whose article 51 stipulates that the prime minister and other ministers are appointed and dismissed by the king. The prime minister is assisted by the deputy prime minister. 2000s democratization During the 2000s, the country experienced an increase in democratization. Tongan Nobles
There are 33 traditional noble titles in the modern Kingdom of Tonga. They are all estate holders. Twenty titles were established by Siaosi Tupou I with the Constitution of 1875. In 1880 he added 11 more. Tupou II created the titles Lasike in 1894 and Veikune in 1903. Sālote Tupou III made in 1921 the title of Tupoutoʻa. In the beginning it was forbidden for a noble to have more than one title. Later this was made possible. Some of the great chiefs who missed out on a noble's title (in 1910) were among others: ʻAlipate Mafileʻo of Kolomotuʻa, SA Sipu of Kolomotuʻa, Iki Lolohea of Haʻapai (but later inherited the Fulivai), Tēvita Tapueluelu of Vavaʻu, SF Tafolo, Tēvita Ula Afuhaʻamango of Vavaʻu, Siosiua Niutupuʻivaha Kaho (but later inherited the Tuʻivakanō). Feleti Vakaʻuta Sevele, Lord Sevele of Vailahi (born 7 July 1944) was the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga from 30 March 2006 to 22 December 2010. Biography Early life Lord Sevele was born in Ma’ufanga, Nuku’alofa. He began his high school education at Apifo'ou College in Tonga, then went to school in Fiji at St John's College in Levuka on the island of Ovalau, and the Marist Brothers High School, Suva. He then attended St Bede's College in Christchurch, New Zealand, before going to the University of Canterbury where he graduated with a BSc degree in mathematics, and a BA, an MA and a PhD degree in economic geography titled '' 'Regional inequalities in socio-economic development in Tonga' ''. Akauola
Mapa Faletau, styled Lord 'Akau'ola (born June 27, 1967), is a Tongan noble, diplomat, and civil servant. His estate is in Taunga in the southern Vava'u Group in the far north of the country. Faletau is the second eldest son of the late Hononorable 'Akau'ola (Inoke Fotu Faletau, 1937–2005). He was educated in the United Kingdom and graduated from high school in Massey, New Zealand. In 2001 he became acting secretary of civil aviation, and later became permanent secretary. After the death of his father in late 2005, Faletau's official name was changed to 'Akau'ola and he inherited estates in Vava'u which included Taunga and Ngau. On 2 March 2007, on Taunga and Ngau were leased by 'Akau'ola to the Warwick International Group of Hotels & Resorts for the construction of a 4 to 5 star hotel resort and spa, which was celebrated as a major achievement for the tourist industry in Tonga. Order Of The Crown Of Tonga
The Royal Order of the Crown of Tonga ('' Tongan: Fakalangilangi 'o Kalauni 'o Tonga'') is an Order of Merit awarded for exceptional services to Tonga and the Crown of Tonga. History It was established 16 April 1913 by George Tupou II to reward those who distinguished themselves by exceptional services to the State and the Crown. The Order was in four classes, and the insignia were designed and manufactured in Germany. The first awards were made in August 1914, to the King, Queen ʻAnaseini Takipō and to F T Goedicke, the Chancellor of the Order. Shortly afterwards word arrived of the outbreak of the First World War, and the king suspended further awards for the duration. The Order was forgotten with Tupou's death in 1918. It was reorganized on 31 July 2008 by King George Tupou V, in particular relatively to all the classes of merit.
