Lutheran Hymn
Martin Luther was a great enthusiast for music, and this is why it forms a large part of Lutheran services; in particular, Luther admired the composers Josquin des Prez and Ludwig Senfl and wanted singing in the church to move away from the ''ars perfecta'' (Catholic Sacred Music of the late Renaissance) and towards singing as a ''Gemeinschaft'' (community). Lutheran hymns are sometimes known as chorales. Lutheran hymnody is well known for its doctrinal, didactic, and musical richness. Matthäus Apelles Von Löwenstern
Matthäus Apelles von Löwenstern (20 April 1594 – 11 April 1648) was a German psalmist, musician and statesman. Life He was born in Prudnik as Matthäus Apelt. His father was a saddler. He studied at the university of Frankfurt. He directed the music of the church at Prudnik. In 1625, he was named musical director and treasurer to Duke Heinrich Wenzel of Münsterberg. The following year, he became rector of a school, and in 1631, he was admitted to the Duke's government. He sat in the governments of Emperors Ferdinand II and Ferdinand III. He became part of the nobility of Ferdinand II, and this was confirmed by Ferdinand III. Löwenstern wrote thirty psalms, of which many were translated to other languages. He also published the psalm collection ''Früelings-Mayen'' in 1644. Psalm 149
Psalm 149 is the 149th psalm of the Book of Psalms, a hymn as the book's penultimate piece. The first verse of the psalm calls to praise in singing, in English in the King James Version: "Sing a new song unto the Lord". Similar to Psalm 96 and Psalm 98 (Cantate Domino), Psalm 149 calls to praise God in music and dance, because he has chosen his people and helped them to victory. A hymn tune is the melody of a musical composition to which a hymn text is sung. Musically speaking, a hymn is generally understood to have four-part (or more) harmony, a fast harmonic rhythm (chords change frequently), with or without refrain or chorus. From the late sixteenth century in England and Scotland, when most people were not musically literate and learned melodies by rote, it was a common practice to sing a new text to a hymn tune the singers already knew which had a suitable meter and character. Alberto Basso (born Turin, 21 August 1931) is an Italian musicologist and librarian. He started his activity in 1952 with a monograph on Stravinsky. In 1956 he graduated in law at the University of Turin but his activity was then fully devoted to music. From 1961 to 1974 he taught history of music at the Conservatory of Turin, where he was also librarian from 1974 to 1993. From 1973 to 1979 and from 1994 to 1997 he was president of the Italian Society of Musicology. In 1986 Basso founded the Istituto per i Beni Musicali in Piemonte (Institute for Musical Heritage of Piedmont). In 1982 he became a member of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
