Singapore Media Merger Of 2004
On 31 December 2004, MediaCorp and SPH MediaWorks agreed to merge effective the following day. The merger is no longer in effect on 29 September 2017, when SPH divested from Mediacorp. Background On 5 June 2000, then Ministry of Information and the Arts announced the start of gradual media competition, with MediaCorp allowed to own a newspaper and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) allowed to own two TV and two radio channels. On 8 June 2000, SPH, the country's main newspaper publishing company, set up a television arm called SPH MediaWorks to provide competition for MediaCorp, which dominated the media industry in Singapore. The Media Development Authority (abbreviation: MDA) was a statutory board of the Singapore Government, under the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI). ''TODAY'' is a Singapore English-language digital news provider under Mediacorp, Singapore's largest media broadcaster and provider and the only terrestrial television broadcaster in the country. It was formerly a national free daily newspaper. At its inception, Mediacorp had a 60% stake in TODAY while, Singapore Press Holdings owned 40% of ''TODAY''. The newspaper was published and distributed from Monday to Saturday. In 2017, the two media companies announced that SPH will divest its stakes in Mediacorp Press, which publishes ''TODAY'', and Mediacorp TV, which owns Channels 5, 8, U, and Mediacorp Studio. Channel 8 ( zh, 8頻道) is a Singaporean free-to-air television channel, airing in Mandarin Chinese. It was created by Television Singapura on 31 August 1963 with experimental broadcasts, before going official on 23 November that year. The channel's logo is a yellow number 8 on top of a red disc. History Channel 8 began its test transmissions on Saturday, 31 August 1963, Malaysia's national day. Its first day consisted of a Hokkien film, repeats of India's participation in the South East Asian Cultural Festival and Singapore Celebrates. Channel U (Singaporean TV Channel)
Channel U (marketed as U頻道, formerly named 优频道) is a Singaporean free-to-air television channel owned by Mediacorp. It was launched on 6 May 2001 by SPH MediaWorks. On 1 January 2005, the channel was transferred to Mediacorp after a merger between SPH MediaWorks and Mediacorp. Its logo is a turquoise sphere with a white letter U on its surface facing left. The channel's programming consists of Chinese-language series and shows produced locally and imported from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand as well as Korean-language series provided by KBS, MBC and SBS. Okto
Okto is a daily children's program block on Mediacorp's Channel 5. The block airs daily during 5's morning and midafternoon time slots. It is also a weekend Mandarin children's program block on Mediacorp's Channel 8. It airs every weekend from 9am to 11am. The Okto brand was introduced as a Singaporean standalone free-to-air television channel. A replacement of the Kids and Arts segments of Central, the channel aired mostly children's programmes, as well as some arts and sports programmes. The channel's target audiences were children ages 2–13, and adults ages 18–39. Okto ceased as a separate channel on 1 May 2019, due to lack of viewership. SPH MediaWorks Ltd () was a free-to-air terrestrial television broadcaster in Singapore that operated two television channels: Channel U (Singaporean TV channel), Channel U and Channel i (Singaporean TV channel), Channel i. It merged with the city-state's long-established broadcasting company, Mediacorp, in 2004. Channel I (Singaporean TV Channel)
Channel i was a Singaporean English language free-to-air terrestrial television channel that was launched on 20 May 2001 as TVWorks. The channel was owned by SPH MediaWorks, a subsidiary of Singapore Press Holdings. As a result of the media merger with Mediacorp, it shut down due to low ratings and lack of advertiser support. All Channel i shows officially moved to Channel 5. Its frequencies (terrestrial and cable) and channel space were taken over by Okto (using Central's old format) nearly four years later. Okto itself later also closed down on 1 May 2019 due to similar reasons, after which the channel space created by TVWorks in 2001, folded and ceased to exist.
