Singapore Teachers' Union
The Singapore Teachers' Union (STU) is the largest teachers' organisation in Singapore. It is an affiliate of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), a member of the ASEAN Council of Teachers and the Education International. The STU was founded in 1946 and represents over 14,000 teachers employed by the Ministry of Education. The STU provides assistance in dealing with work-related problems and advice on terms and conditions of service. It works through collaboration, cooperation and dialogues with the Ministry of Education. It also organises various workshops, courses and seminars for teachers. History There were teachers associated with the Malayan Democratic Union (MDU), a political party with an anti-colonial platform. Catholic Junior College
Catholic Junior College (CJC) () is a junior college in Singapore, offering a two-year course for pre-university students leading to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level examination. Founded in 1975, Catholic Junior College was the third junior college to be established in Singapore. History Plans for a junior college operated by the Catholic mission were first announced by then-Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew at the opening of National Junior College in May 1970, as one of several planned to be set up. Subsequently, the Catholic mission disclosed plans for a fund-raising campaign in June 1970. Lee Kuan Yew (16 September 1923 – 23 March 2015), born Harry Lee Kuan Yew, often referred to by his initials LKY, was a Singaporean lawyer and statesman who served as Prime Minister of Singapore between 1959 and 1990, and Secretary-General of the People's Action Party between 1954 and 1992. Singapore Labour Foundation
The Singapore Labour Foundation (SLF) was established on 12 December 1977 and is a statutory board under the Ministry of Manpower. Its aims are to improve the welfare of union members and to further the development of trade unions in Singapore. The SLF provides financial support for the various educational, social, cultural and recreational activities and programmes organised by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and its affiliated unions and co-operatives. The foundation also extends help to lower-income union members, and provides club and resort facilities to meet the recreational and social needs of its members. Former National Stadium, Singapore
The former Singapore National Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Kallang, which opened in July 1973 and closed on 30 June 2007. The stadium was demolished from 2010 to 2011 for the development of the Singapore Sports Hub, which houses its successor. During its closure from 2007 to 2014, the National Day Parade (NDP) and sports events were held at the Marina Bay Floating Platform and Jalan Besar Stadium. The stadium was prominently the home of Singapore FA, a club side, and the Singapore national team. It also hosted the Singapore Cup finals annually, the first in 1996, and the second leg of the 2004 AFF Championship finals. Goh Keng Swee
Goh Keng Swee (; 6 October 1918 – 14 May 2010), born Robert Goh Keng Swee, was a Singaporean politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore between 1973 and 1985. Devan Nair
Chengara Veetil Devan Nair (5 August 1923 – 6 December 2005), also known as C. V. Devan Nair and better known simply as Devan Nair, was a Malaysian-Singaporean politician who served as the third president of Singapore from 1981 until his resignation in 1985. Nair was a communist as a young adult, having been affiliated with the Malayan Communist Party. He harboured anti-colonial sentiments and aspired self-determination of Singapore, which was then a British colony. These caused him to be detained by the British colonial authorities in 1951. In 1954, he joined the People's Action Party, which was more leftist at the time. He was detained again in 1956, and remained so until the PAP won the 1959 general election and helped secure his release.
