Simple Service Discovery Protocol
The Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) is a network protocol based on the Internet protocol suite for advertisement and discovery of network services and presence information. It accomplishes this without assistance of server-based configuration mechanisms, such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) or Domain Name System (DNS), and without special static configuration of a network host. SSDP is the basis of the discovery protocol of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and is intended for use in residential or small office environments. It was formally described in an IETF Internet Draft by Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard in 1999. Although the IETF proposal has since expired (April, 2000), SSDP was incorporated into the UPnP protocol stack, and a description of the final implementation is included in UPnP standards documents. __TOC__ Protocol transport and addressing SSDP is a text-based protocol based on HTTPU. It uses UDP as the underlying transport protocol. Services ...

Network Protocol
A communication protocol is a system of rules that allows two or more entities of a communications system to transmit information via any kind of variation of a physical quantity. The protocol defines the rules, syntax, semantics and synchronization of communication and possible error recovery methods. Protocols may be implemented by hardware, software, or a combination of both. Communicating systems use well-defined formats for exchanging various messages. Each message has an exact meaning intended to elicit a response from a range of possible responses pre-determined for that particular situation. The specified behavior is typically independent of how it is to be implemented. Communication protocols have to be agreed upon by the parties involved. To reach an agreement, a protocol may be developed into a technical standard. A programming language describes the same for computations, so there is a close analogy between protocols and programming languages: ''protocols are to co ...

Link-local Address
In computer networking, a link-local address is a unicast network address that is valid only for communications within the subnetwork that the host is connected to. Link-local addresses are most often assigned automatically with a process known as stateless address autoconfiguration or link-local address autoconfiguration, also known as automatic private IP addressing (APIPA) or auto-IP. Link-local addresses are not guaranteed to be unique beyond their network segment. Therefore, routers do not forward packets with link-local source or destination addresses. IPv4 link-local addresses are assigned from address block ( through ). In IPv6, they are assigned from the block . Address assignment Link-local addresses may be assigned manually by an administrator or by automatic operating system procedures. In Internet Protocol (IP) networks, they are assigned most often using stateless address autoconfiguration, a process that often uses a stochastic process to select the value of l ...

WS-Discovery
Web Services Dynamic Discovery (WS-Discovery) is a technical specification that defines a multicast discovery protocol to locate services on a local network. It operates over TCP and UDP port 3702 and uses IP multicast address or . As the name suggests, the actual communication between nodes is done using web services standards, notably SOAP-over-UDP. Various components in Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system use WS-Discovery, e.g. "People near me". The component WSDMON in Windows 7 and later uses WS-Discovery to automatically discover WSD-enabled network printers, which show in Network in Windows Explorer, and can be installed by double-clicking on them. In Windows 8 or later installation is automatic. WS-Discovery is enabled by default in networked HP printers since 2008. WS-Discovery is an integral part of Windows Rally technologies and Devices Profile for Web Services. The protocol was originally developed by BEA Systems, Canon, Intel, Microsoft, and WebMethods. Discovery And Launch
Discovery and Launch (DIAL) is a protocol co-developed by Netflix and YouTube with help from Sony and Samsung. It is a mechanism for discovering and launching applications on a single subnet, typically a home network. It relies on Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP), and HTTP protocols. The protocol works without requiring a pairing between devices. It was formerly used by the Chromecast media streaming adapter that was introduced in July 2013 by Google. (Chromecast now uses mDNS instead of DIAL.) DIAL enables what the TV industry calls ''second screen'' devices, such as tablet computers and mobile phones to send content to ''first screen'' devices, such as televisions, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes. Terminology and operation * 1st screen: a television, Blu-ray player, set-top-box, or similar device. * 2nd screen: a smartphone, tablet, or similar device. * DIAL Server: a device implementing the server side of the DIAL protocol, usually a 1st ...

Neighbor Discovery Protocol
The Neighbor Discovery Protocol (NDP), or simply Neighbor Discovery (ND), is a protocol of the Internet protocol suite used with Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). It operates at the link layer of the Internet model, and is responsible for gathering various information required for network communication, including the configuration of local connections and the domain name servers and gateways.RFC 4861, ''Neighbor Discovery for IP version 6 (IPv6)'', T. Narten ''et al''. (September 2007) The protocol defines five ICMPv6 packet types to perform functions for IPv6 similar to the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) and Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Router Discovery and Router Redirect protocols for IPv4. It provides many improvements over its IPv4 counterparts (RFC 4861, section 3.1). For example, it includes Neighbor Unreachability Detection (NUD), thus improving robustness of packet delivery in the presence of failing routers or links, or mobile nodes. The Inverse ...

Zero-configuration Networking
Zero-configuration networking (zeroconf) is a set of technologies that automatically creates a usable computer network based on the Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) when computers or network peripherals are interconnected. It does not require manual operator intervention or special configuration servers. Without zeroconf, a network administrator must set up network services, such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS), or configure each computer's network settings manually. Zeroconf is built on three core technologies: automatic assignment of numeric network addresses for networked devices, automatic distribution and resolution of computer hostnames, and automatic location of network services, such as printing devices. Background Computer networks use numeric network addresses to identify communications endpoints in a network of participating devices. This is similar to the telephone network which assigns a string of digits to identify each t ...

Jini
Jini (), also called Apache River, is a network architecture for the construction of distributed systems in the form of modular co-operating services. JavaSpaces is a part of the Jini. Originally developed by Sun Microsystems, Jini was released under the Apache License 2.0. Responsibility for Jini has been transferred to Apache under the project name "River". History Sun Microsystems introduced Jini in July 1998. In November 1998, Sun announced that there were some firms supporting Jini. The Jini team at Sun has always stated that ''Jini'' is not an acronym. Ken Arnold has joked that it means "Jini Is Not Initials", making it a recursive anti-acronym, but it has always been just ''Jini''. The word 'jini' means "the devil" in Swahili; this is borrowed from the Arabic word for a mythological spirit, originated from the Latin ''genius'', which is also the origin of the English word 'genie'. Jini provides the infrastructure for the Service-object-oriented architecture (SOOA). ...

Service Location Protocol
The Service Location Protocol (SLP, srvloc) is a service discovery protocol that allows computers and other devices to find services in a local area network without prior configuration. SLP has been designed to scale from small, unmanaged networks to large enterprise networks. It has been defined in RFC 2608 and RFC 3224 as standards track document. Overview SLP is used by devices to announce ''services'' on a local network. Each service must have a URL that is used to locate the service. Additionally it may have an unlimited number of name/value pairs, called ''attributes''. Each device must always be in one or more ''scopes''. Scopes are simple strings and are used to group services, comparable to the ''network neighborhood'' in other systems. A device cannot see services that are in different scopes. The URL of a printer could look like: service:printer:lpr://myprinter/myqueue This URL describes a queue called "myqueue" on a printer with the host name "myprinter". The proto ...

Botnet
A botnet is a group of Internet-connected devices, each of which runs one or more bots. Botnets can be used to perform Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, steal data, send spam, and allow the attacker to access the device and its connection. The owner can control the botnet using command and control (C&C) software. The word "botnet" is a portmanteau of the words "robot" and "network". The term is usually used with a negative or malicious connotation. Overview A botnet is a logical collection of Internet-connected devices, such as computers, smartphones or Internet of things (IoT) devices whose security have been breached and control ceded to a third party. Each compromised device, known as a "bot," is created when a device is penetrated by software from a '' malware'' (malicious software) distribution. The controller of a botnet is able to direct the activities of these compromised computers through communication channels formed by standards-based network protocols, su ...
