Simon D'Entremont
Simon d'Entremont (October 28, 1788 – September 6, 1886) was a farmer and political figure in Nova Scotia of Acadian descent. He represented Argyle township in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1836 to 1840. D'Entremont and Frederick Armand Robicheau, elected in the same election are believed to be the first Acadians elected to a legislative assembly in North America. (Joseph Winniett, whose mother was Acadian, was the first Acadian to serve in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1761.) He was born in West Pubnico, Nova Scotia, the son of Benoni d'Entremont and Anne-Marguerite Pothier. In 1810, he married Elizabeth Larkin. D’Entremont married Élisabeth Thériault in 1831 after the death of his first wife. He was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1840. West Pubnico or Pubnico-Ouest is a small Acadian fishing village located 42 km from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on Nova Scotia Route 335. A justice of the peace (JP) is a judicial officer of a lower or ''puisne'' court, elected or appointed by means of a commission ( letters patent) to keep the peace. In past centuries the term commissioner of the peace was often used with the same meaning. The ''Dictionary of Canadian Biography'' (''DCB''; french: Dictionnaire biographique du Canada) is a dictionary of biographical entries for individuals who have contributed to the history of Canada. The ''DCB'', which was initiated in 1959, is a collaboration between the University of Toronto and Laval University. Benoni D'Entremont
Benoni d'Entremont (c. 1745 – February 21, 1841) was a mariner, shipbuilder, office holder, justice of the peace, and militia officer in Nova Scotia of Acadian descent. Early life He was born in Pubnico, Nova Scotia, around 1745, the son of Jacques Mius d'Entremont, third Baron de Pobomcoup, and Marguerite Amirault. On August 29, 1766, at the age of 21, he returned from exile, arriving in Pubnico with his family and eight others. After his return, he became involved in the civic affairs of Yarmouth County. He was the first Acadian Magistrate and Justice of the Peace in Nova Scotia, recorded in 1780; first Assessor for the Municipality of Argyle the same year, and the first Treasurer of that district, having been appointed the following year. Joseph Winniett
Joseph Winniett (1726–1789) was a public official, judge and political figure in Nova Scotia. He was the first Acadian elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. He represented Annapolis Township from 1761 to 1765 and Annapolis County from 1765 to 1770 in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. He was born in Annapolis, Nova Scotia, the son of William Winniett and Acadian Marie-Madeleine Maisonnat. He was the grandson of Baptiste and the brother-in-law to Edward How. was a justice of the peace, a collector of customs and excise duties, a judge of probates and wills and a registrar of deeds.
