Simon Prast
Simon Prast is a director and actor from Auckland, New Zealand. Prast was the founder of the Auckland Theatre Company and director of the first Auckland Festival AK03. Early life Prast grew up in Otara and Waikowhai, Auckland. He was educated at Waikowhai Primary, King's School and Auckland Grammar School. He holds a Law Degree (LLB) from the University of Auckland and is a graduate of Theatre Corporate. Career Theatre Prast performed at both the Downstage in Wellington and Mercury theatres in Auckland after graduating from the Theatre Corporate Drama School in 1984. He made his professional debut opposite Michael Hurst in Theatre Corporate's 1985 production of ''Torch Song Trilogy''. The Rainbow Warrior (film)
''The Rainbow Warrior'' (sometimes called ''The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior'') is a 1993 made-for-television drama film directed by Michael Tuchner and starring Jon Voight and Sam Neill. Plot summary The film is based on the true story of the Greenpeace ship ''Rainbow Warrior'', which was sunk in Waitematā Harbour in Auckland, New Zealand on 10 July 1985 by French DGSE operatives, when it was preparing for a Pacific voyage to protest against French nuclear testing. Shona Laing
Shona Laing (born 9 October 1955) is a New Zealand musician. She has had several hits in her native country, as well as a few minor international hits, most notably "(Glad I'm) Not a Kennedy" and "Soviet Snow". Laing contributed to Manfred Mann's Earth Band album ''Somewhere in Afrika'' and contributed music to, and appeared in, the 1985 action film ''Shaker Run''. Musical career Laing first came to prominence in 1972 as a 17-year-old schoolgirl, coming runner-up in the television talent show ''New Faces'' with her song "1905". Signed to a recording contract with Phonogram, her first two singles, "1905" and "Show Your Love" both certified gold and both peaked at number 4 on the New Zealand charts. Pātea Māori Club
Pātea Māori Club is a New Zealand cultural group and performance act formed in the South Taranaki District, South Taranaki town of Patea, Pātea in 1967 as the Pātea Methodist Māori Club. In 1983, the group began to release Māori language, Māori-language Pop music, pop and Hip hop music, hip hop music, produced by Dalvanius Prime with lyrics by Ngoi Pēwhairangi. Their first single, "Poi E", reached number one on the New Zealand top 50 singles of 1984, New Zealand top 50 singles chart in 1984. The group released further singles, such as "Aku Raukura", "Hei Konei Rā, Hei Konei Rā (Farewell)", and "E Papa", and toured the United Kingdom in 1984 and 1985. Prime had plans for a musical adaptation of "Poi E" and a separate children's animated film, however the death of Pēwhairangi in 1985 slowed progress for these projects. Dalvanius Prime
Maui Dalvanius Prime (16 January 1948 – 3 October 2002) was a New Zealand entertainer and songwriter. His career spanned 30 years. He mentored many of New Zealand's Māori performers, and was a vocal and forthright supporter of Māori culture. Early life Born and raised in Patea, Prime was of Tainui, Ngapuhi, Ngati Ruanui, Tuwharetoa, Nga Rauru, Pakakohi and Ngāi Tahu descent. The sixth of 11 children, Prime grew up in a musical household. He attended the Church College of New Zealand located in Temple View, Hamilton during his high school years. Career In the late 1960s Prime moved to Wellington and worked as a cook by day and musician at night. His involvement with The Shevelles, a Māori female vocal trio from Porirua, lead to several trips to Australia. A telethon (a portmanteau of "television" and "marathon") is a televised fundraising event that lasts many hours or even days, the purpose of which is to raise money for a charitable, political or other purportedly worthy cause. Most telethons feature heavy solicitations for pledges (promises to donate funds at a later time) by masters of ceremonies or hosts, who are often local celebrities or media personalities combined with variety show style entertainment such as singers, bands and instrumentalists.
