Simon Gillies
Simon Gillies is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative forward, he played his club football in Sydney for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (with whom he won the 1995 ARL Premiership), as well as in England for the Warrington Wolves. His older brother Ben Gillies also played for Canterbury-Bankstown. Playing career Gillies made his first grade debut for Canterbury in the major semi final against Cronulla-Sutherland which Canterbury won 26-8 at the Sydney Football Stadium. Gillies was not selected in Canterbury's 1988 grand final team which defeated Balmain in the decider. In 1993, Gillies played from the bench in Canterbury's preliminary final loss against eventual premiers the Brisbane Broncos. Canterbury, New South Wales
Canterbury is a suburb extending across south-western Sydney and the Inner West, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Canterbury is located south-west of the Sydney central business district in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. The former City of Canterbury took its name from the suburb, however its administrative centre was located in the adjacent suburb of Campsie, which is also a large commercial centre. History The original inhabitants of the area were the Bediagal clan of the Eora nation. The first European land grant in this suburb was of to a "very good, pious, inoffensive man", the Reverend Richard Johnson (1753-1827), the colony's first chaplain, in 1793. 1995 ARL Season
The 1995 ARL premiership was the 88th season of professional rugby league football in Australia, and the first to be run by the Australian Rugby League following the hand-over of the Premiership's administration by the New South Wales Rugby League. For the first time since the 1988 NSWRL season, the Premiership expanded again, with the addition of two new clubs from Queensland; North Queensland, based in Townsville, and South Queensland, based in Brisbane. Warrington () is a town and unparished area in the borough of the same name in the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, on the banks of the River Mersey. Parramatta Eels
The Parramatta Eels are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta that competes in the National Rugby League. The Parramatta District Rugby League Football Club was formed in 1947, and their home ground was Parramatta Stadium (formerly Cumberland Oval). As of 2019, Parramatta's home ground stadium has been rebuilt and they now play as the co-tenants at Western Sydney Stadium, which sits on the same site that was once Parramatta Stadium. It took thirty years for the club to make the grand final, which they did in 1976 and 1977, losing on both occasions. However, this period foreshadowed their most successful period in the early 1980s, when they won four premierships and qualified for five grand finals in six seasons.
