Simon Emmerson
Simon Emmerson (born 12 February 1956) is an English record producer, guitarist, DJ, musical director at Lush, and founder of the group Afro Celt Sound System. He is also the main organiser of The Imagined Village, a collaborative work from many roots artists. Emmerson also plays on this album. In 1995 Emmerson was nominated for a Grammy for his production work on Baaba Maal's album ''Firin' in Fouta''. Earlier in his career, under the pseudonym Simon Booth, he was a member of the bands Working Week and Weekend, played guitar on Everything but the Girl's debut album '' Eden'' and produced records for Baaba Maal and Manu Dibango. The Imagined Village
The Imagined Village is a folk music project founded by Simon Emmerson of Afro Celt Sound System. It is intended to produce modern folk music that represented modern multiculturalism in the United Kingdom and as such, featured musicians from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The name of the project came from the 1993 book ''The Imagined Village'' by Georgina Boyes. The project started in 2004, and led to the release of an eponymous album in 2007 by a collective of artists on Real World Records. Some of the tracks on it are modern re-interpretations of traditional folk songs. ''The Imagined Village E.P.'' was released earlier in 2007, and is a remix of the album tracks. The 2008 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards voted "Cold, Hailey, Rainy Night" as best traditional track. In 2009, the project moved to a new record label, ECC Records, and a second album, ''Empire & Love'' was released in January 2010, followed by ''Bending the Dark'' in May 2012. ''Firin' in Fouta'' is an album by the Senegalese singer Baaba Maal, released in 1994. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award, in the "Best World Music Album" category. Maal supported the album with a North American tour. Production The album was produced by Simon Emmerson. It was recorded in Podor and Dakar, in Senegal, and at London's Real World Studios. Dónal Lunny and Simon Jeffes were among the musicians who contributed to ''Firin' in Fouta''. Positive Black Soul appeared on "Swing Yela". Show Of Hands
Show of Hands is an English acoustic roots/folk duo formed in 1986 by singer-songwriter Steve Knightley (guitars, mandolin, mandocello, cuatro) and composer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Beer (vocals, guitars, violin, viola, mandolin, mandocello). Joined by singer and double-bassist Miranda Sykes for a tour in 2004, Show of Hands continued to regularly perform as a trio with Sykes, as well as in their original format. In 2019 the line-up was further expanded by the addition of Irish percussionist Cormac Byrne. Known for their songs with rousing choruses that address contemporary social issues, (notably their "singalong attack on the bankers", Arrogance Ignorance and Greed) these often illustrate current concerns through historical narratives and have earned Knightley the label the 'Gravel voiced spokesman of the rural poor'. ''Witness'' is the twelfth studio album by British folk duo Show of Hands. The album was recorded in January 2006 at Presshouse Studio, Colyton, Devon, and was produced by Simon Emmerson and Simon ‘Mass’ Massey from the Afro Celts, who helped to incorporate elements of traditional African, ambient and electronic dance music with the duo's characteristic folk style. It was the band's first album in twelve years to use a rhythm section. Lyrically, the album addresses communal and heritage values, and was described by the duo's lead singer Steve Knightley as a "cinematic style journey of the West Country."Liner notes. The album features unofficial third member Miranda Sykes on ten of its twelve tracks. It was released in May 2006 on the band's Hands on Music label, with the catalogue number HMCD23.
