Simione Kaitani
Simione Kaitani is a former Fijian politician. He was previously a Cabinet Minister from 2001 to 2006, serving initially as Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, and later as Information Minister. He resigned these portfolios in favour of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu on 20 September 2005, but remained in the Cabinet as a Minister without portfolio. Following the general election of 2006, he was appointed Leader of the House, and as such was responsible for the conduct of government business in the House of Representatives. He remained in this position until the military coup that overthrew the government on 5 December 2006. Kaitani was first elected to the House of Representatives as an independent candidate to represent the Lomaiviti Fijian Communal constituency in the general election of 1999, and later joined the Christian Democratic Alliance (VLV). Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua
The United Fiji Party ( fj, Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua, SDL) was a political party in Fiji. It was founded in 2001 by Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase as a power base; it absorbed most of the Christian Democratic Alliance and other conservative groups, and its endorsement by the Great Council of Chiefs ''(Bose Levu Vakaturaga)'' caused it to be widely seen as the successor to the Alliance Party, the former ruling party that had dominated Fijian politics from the 1960s to the 1980s. Iftakhar Iqbal Ahmad Khan is an Indo-Fijian lawyer based in the city of Lautoka. Khan practiced law in Parramatta, Australia as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society. Khan has a controversial reputation, both in Fiji and Australia, where he was disqualified from practicing law in the state of Queensland in 2001, for nondisclosure of information to the barristers board when seeking admission. Mitieli Bulanauca
Mitieli Bulanauca (born 1951 or 1952) is a Fijian politician and former Cabinet Minister. He is currently a member of the People's Alliance. He was educated at Lelean Memorial School in Nausori, Fiji. He graduated from the University of New England, Australia (UNE) in 1996. Before joining politics, Bulanauca worked for the Native Lands Trust Board as a senior lands manager. He won the Bua Fijian Communal Constituency for the Christian Democratic Alliance (VLV) in the parliamentary election of 1999. In the political upheaval that followed the Fiji coup of 2000, Bulanauca was appointed to the interim Cabinet formed by Laisenia Qarase as Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources. The Senate of Fiji was the upper chamber of Parliament. It was abolished by the 2013 Constitution of Fiji, after a series of military coups. It was the less powerful of the two chambers; it could not initiate legislation, but could amend or veto it. The Senate's powers over financial bills were more restricted: it could veto them in their entirety, but could not amend them. The House of Representatives could override a Senatorial veto by passing the bill a second time in the parliamentary session immediately following the one in which it was rejected by the Senate, after a minimum period of six months. George Speight
George Speight (born 1957) is a Fijian businessman and politician who was the leader of the 2000 Fijian coup d'état, in which he and rebel soldiers from Fiji's Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit seized the Fijian Parliament and held Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and 35 other MP's hostage from 19 May 2000 to 13 July 2000. After being convicted of treason for leading the coup, he is currently serving a sentence of life imprisonment.
