Silver Deputy Stakes
The Silver Deputy Stakes is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the fourth week of August at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Open to two-year-old horses, it is contested over a distance of six and one half furlongs on Polytrack synthetic dirt. In 2006, the race was run at 7.5 furlongs. 2009 will be its twelfth running. In addition to the $100,000 purse, the event offers up to $10,000 in bonus money for eligible Ontario-bred horses as well as up to $15,150 Ontario Sired/Ontario Bred Breeder Awards. The race is named for Windfields Farm stallion A stallion is a male horse that has not been gelded (castrated). Woodbine Racetrack
Woodbine Racetrack is a race track for Thoroughbred horse racing in the Etobicoke area of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Owned by Woodbine Entertainment Group, Woodbine Racetrack manages and hosts Canada's most famous race, the King's Plate. The track was opened in 1956 with a one-mile oval dirt track, as well as a seven-eights turf course. It has been extensively remodeled since 1993, and since 1994 has had three racecourses. History The current Woodbine carries the name originally used by a racetrack which operated in southeast Toronto, at Queen Street East and Kingston Road, from 1874 through 1993. (While the Old Woodbine Race Course was at the south end of Woodbine Avenue, the current Woodbine is nowhere near it.) Constant Montpellier
Constant Montpellier (born August 30, 1961) is a Canadian jockey in Canadian Thoroughbred horse racing. In 1993, he won the Sovereign Award as Canada's Outstanding Apprentice Jockey. Montpellier was born in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec. Prior to his career in Thoroughbred racing, Montpeller was a newspaper and magazine photographer in Montreal. In 2007, Constant Montpellier took up the sport of speed skating and the following year won the Gold Medal in the 40-49 age group at the North American speed skating championships. Roger Attfield
Roger L. Attfield (born 28 November 1939 in Newbury, Berkshire, England) is a Canadian thoroughbred horse trainer and owner and an inductee of both the Canadian and United States horseracing Halls of Fame. In his native England, Attfield had become an accomplished international-level equestrian competitor when he emigrated to Canada in 1970. Five years later he returned to the sport he loved and began working as a trainer of show jumping horses and eventually was offered the chance to train thoroughbred race horses. Instant success led to training opportunities for other owners including for Frank Stronach and Kinghaven Farms where he met with his greatest success. A resident of Nobleton, Ontario, Roger Attfield won the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer a record six times.
