Silver Bow Basin
The Silver Bow Basin, often written as Silverbow Basin, is a valley located northeast of Juneau, Alaska, USA. It is situated on Gold Creek in an area north of Icy Gulch, and approximately north of Gastineau Peak. A trail from Juneau leads directly to the mountainside. The basin was the site of the earliest gold discovery in the Juneau area, leading to the establishment of the town called Juneau. Etymology There are opposing theories as to who named the basin. One version states that it was named by Richard Harris after the mine in Silver Bow, Montana. Another theory is that it was named by a party of Montana miners in honor of their last camp in Montana. History Placer was found in the basin's Gold Creek in 1880 by Richard Harris and Joe Juneau. This gold discovery led to the creation of the town called Juneau. Alaska-Gastineau Mine
The Alaska-Gastineau Mine (alternate: Perseverance Mine) was a gold mine in Perseverance, about east of Juneau, Alaska, USA. It was briefly the largest gold mine in the world. The mine was operated by the Alaska-Gastineau Mining Company. Geography The Alaska-Gastineau Mine was located within the Silver Bow Basin. Its concentrating plant was situated near Thane. A moraine is any accumulation of unconsolidated debris (regolith and rock), sometimes referred to as glacial till, that occurs in both currently and formerly glaciated regions, and that has been previously carried along by a glacier or ice sheet. The Co-Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was until 2020 the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Juneau and is currently a cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Anchorage-Juneau. The cathedral is located at 416 Fifth Street in Juneau, Alaska. The cathedral may be the smallest in North America. Gastineau Channel
Gastineau Channel (LingÃt: ''Séet Ká'') is a channel between the mainland of the U.S. state of Alaska and Douglas Island in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska. It separates Juneau on the mainland side from Douglas (now part of Juneau), on Douglas Island. The first European to sight the channel was Joseph Whidbey early in August 1794, first from the south and later from the west. Alaska-Juneau Gold Mining Company
The Alaska-Juneau Gold Mining Company (AJGMC) was incorporated under the laws of West Virginia, USA in 1897. Its lode mining claims covered approximately on the wide vein called the Juneau gold belt of which it owned one mile on the outcrop. Mining properties and operations The company's property was in Alaska's Juneau mining district. The AJGMC purchased over two dozen patented claims in the Silver Bow Basin for lode mining low grade gold ore.
