Silver, Texas
Silver is an unincorporated community in northwestern Coke County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 60 in 2000. History In the 1870s, Silver was a ranching community. In 1890, Thomas J. Wiley opened the first post office. Due to a drought, the post office closed in 1907 but reopened that next year. Between 1910 and 1940, only ten people lived there. Allen Jameson's land was found to contain oil in 1946, and by July 1949 the Sun Oil Company had installed 59 producing wells in the Jameson oilfield. State Highway 208 was paved from Robert Lee to Silver, and a rail spur was constructed from Maryneal. With around a thousand people living in camps the oil company built, Silver grew to be one of the biggest cities in the county. Maryneal is an unincorporated community in southern Nolan County, Texas, United States. It lies along FM 608 south of the city of Sweetwater, the county seat of Nolan County. Its elevation is 2,566 feet (782 m). Although Maryneal is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 79535; the ZCTA for ZIP Code 79535 had a population of 181 at the 2000 census. Founded in 1907 along the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway (and currently along the route of the Texas and Oklahoma Railroad), the community was named for one or more people; the source of its name is disputed. Colorado City, Texas
Colorado City ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Mitchell County, Texas, United States. Its population was 3,991 at the 2020 census. History Colorado City originated as a ranger camp in 1877. It grew into a cattlemen's center and has been called "the Mother City of West Texas". The town acquired a railway station and post office in 1881 and was named the county seat. In the early 1880s it was a center for cattle shipment, with herds driven to Colorado City and loaded onto trains for shipment to the eastern markets. The population was estimated at 6,000 in 1884–1885, but dropped to 2,500 by 1890 after a drought, and dropped further with the growth of nearby San Angelo. Robert Lee, Texas
Robert Lee is a city in and the county seat of Coke County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,049 at the 2010 census. The founders named the city after Robert E. Lee who is thought to have set up camp for a time near the current townsite on the Colorado River. Lee served in Texas from 1856 to 1861 as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Second Cavalry, during which time he distinguished himself as a scout and engineer. The town of Robert Lee is located on the Colorado River. Just upstream from the town is E.V. Spence Reservoir, managed by the Colorado River Municipal Water District. From the mid-1960s until approximately 1996, the reservoir's population of striped bass attracted sportsmen from across the southwestern U.S., providing significant income to the town. Texas State Highway 208
State Highway 208 (SH 208) is a Texas state highway that runs from San Angelo to southeast of Spur. History The route was originally designated on July 16, 1934 from San Angelo to Robert Lee. On June 16, 1936, SH 208 was extended north to Colorado City. The section from Robert Lee to Colorado City was dropped on March 26, 1942, but was reinstated on April 23, 1947, when it replaced RM 18. On February 23, 1956, the route was extended farther north to Snyder, replacing part of SH 101, and was signed (but not designated) to Spur along FM 1231 and FM 948. The extension to Spur was officially designated on August 29, 1990 to Spur, cancelling FM 1231 and FM 948. FM 1231 was designated in 1949 as a route from US 84 at Snyder north 8.8 miles to a road intersection. In 1951, FM 1231 was extended north to the Kent County Line.
