Silvana Lima
Silvana Lima is a Brazilian professional surfer. She was born in Paracuru, Ceará, Brazil on 29 October 1984 and grew up in a snack-shack on the sand, owned by her parents. When she was seven years old, she fashioned a makeshift fin to a piece of wood and taught herself to surf. She got her first real surfboard at age 14. Despite competing in the top tier of women's surfing for eight years, Lima was unable to secure sponsorship. She spoke publicly about the challenge, attributing it to surf wear brands only wanting to sponsor surfers who look like models, regardless of their talents. In order to fund her travels, she began breeding French bulldogs. In the ASP World Tour, she placed 9th in 2006, 3rd in 2007, runner-up in 2008 and 2009, 4th in 2010 and 5th in 2011. Bells Beach is a coastal locality of Victoria, Australia in Surf Coast Shire and a renowned surf beach, located 100 km south-west of Melbourne, on the Great Ocean Road near the towns of Torquay and Jan Juc. It is named after William Bell, a Master Mariner, who owned much of the property there from the 1840s. Many records wrongly accredit the location's name to John Calvert Bell of the family that took up a pastoral run there much later in 1905 and built the 'Addiscot' homestead. John Calvert Bell was, before that time, a resident at Calder Park, Mount Duneed, and not related to William Bell of Bells Beach. The beach and coastal reserve are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The Rip Curl Pro, formerly the Bells Beach Surf Classic, is a WSL (formerly ASP) World Tour surfing competition held in and around Torquay, Victoria and sponsored by surf company Rip Curl. The event is based at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia. The event winner is awarded the prestigious 'Bell' trophy.
