Sillago Ciliata
The sand whiting (''Sillago ciliata''), also known as the summer whiting, yellowfin whiting or blue-nose whiting, is a common species of coastal fish, coastal marine fish of the family Sillaginidae, the smelt-whitings. It is a slender, slightly compressed fish that is very similar to other species of ''Sillago'', with detailed Fish anatomy#Spines and rays, spine, Fish anatomy#Spines and rays, ray and lateral line scale (zoology), scale counts needed to distinguish the species between its nearest relative ''Sillago analis''. The sand whiting is distributed along the east coast of Australia from Cape York Peninsula, Cape York south to Tasmania, as well as Lord Howe Island and New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean. The sand whiting commonly inhabits shallow sandy substrates in bays, estuaries and surf zones where it preys on polychaete worms, small crustaceans and bivalve molluscs. Byron Bay ( Minjungbal: ''Cavvanbah)'' is a beachside town located in the far-northeastern corner of the state of New South Wales, Australia on Bundjalung Country. It is located north of Sydney and south of Brisbane. Cape Byron, a headland adjacent to the town, is the easternmost point of mainland Australia. At the 2021 census, the town had a permanent population of 6,330. It is the largest town of Byron Shire, though not the shire's administrative centre (which is Mullumbimby). History Byron Bay and surrounds is located on unceded land of the Bundjalung Nation of the Arakwal, Minjungbal and the Widjabul people who have lived by the coast for at least 22,000 years.
