Siliguri ( ), also known as Shiliguri, is a major tier-II city in West Bengal. It forms twin cities, "Twin Cities" with the neighbouring district capital of Jalpaiguri. The city spans areas of the Darjeeling district, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts in the Indian states and territories of India, state of West Bengal. Known as the ''"Gateway of Northeast India"'', Siliguri is popular for three Ts: tea, timber and tourism. It is located on the banks of the Mahananda River and the Teesta River at the foothills of the Himalayas. Siliguri is the List of metropolitan area in West Bengal, third largest urban agglomeration in West Bengal, after Kolkata and Asansol. Metropolis
A metropolis () is a large city or conurbation which is a significant economic, political, and cultural center for a country or region, and an important hub for regional or international connections, commerce, and communications. A big city belonging to a larger urban agglomeration, but which is not the core of that agglomeration, is not generally considered a metropolis but a part of it.
