Sigrið Av Skarði Joensen
Sigrið av Skarði Joensen, also Sigrið av Skarði, (May 12, 1908 – July 3, 1975) was a Faroese journalist, teacher, and feminist. Life Sigrið av Skarði Joensen was born in FagralÃð, KlaksvÃk in 1908, the daughter of SÃmun av Skarði (1872–1942) and Súsanna Kathrina Jacobsen (1876–1978). Both of her parents taught at the Faroese Folk High School ( fo, Føroya Fólkaháskúli), which at that time was located between FagralÃð and KlaksvÃk. In 1909 the school was relocated to Tórshavn and the family followed. After receiving her ''examen artium'' in Denmark in 1927, Sigrið av Skarði studied history and English at the University of Copenhagen. Although she interrupted her studies, she started teaching these subjects in 1941. She also became engaged in journalism early on. KlaksvÃk
KlaksvÃk is the second largest town of the Faroe Islands behind Tórshavn. The town is located on Borðoy, which is one of the northernmost islands (the Norðoyar). It is the administrative centre of KlaksvÃk municipality. History The first settlement at KlaksvÃk dates back to Viking times, but it was not until the 20th century that the district merged to form a large, modern Faroese town that became a cultural and commercial centre for the Northern Isles and the Faroe Islands as a whole. KlaksvÃk is located between two inlets lying back to back. It has an important harbour with fishing industry and a modern fishing fleet. Originally, four farms were located where KlaksvÃk is now. In time, they grew into four villages: Vágur, Myrkjanoyri, Gerðar and Uppsalir; which finally merged to form the town of KlaksvÃk in 1938. At the outset of World War II in September 1939, Denmark declared itself neutral. For most of the war, the country was a protectorate and then an occupied territory of Germany. The decision to occupy Denmark was taken in Berlin on 17 December 1939. On 9 April 1940, Germany occupied Denmark in Operation Weserübung. The Danish government and king functioned as relatively normal in a ''de facto'' protectorate over the country until 29 August 1943, when Germany placed Denmark under direct military occupation, which lasted until the Allied victory on 5 May 1945.
