"High We Exalt Thee, Realm of the Free" is the national anthem of Sierra Leone. Written by Clifford Nelson Fyle and composed by John Akar in a nationwide competition, it was adopted in 1961 when the country became independent from the United Kingdom, replacing "God Save The Queen". Clifford Nelson Fyle
Clifford Nelson Fyle (March 29, 1933 – January 18, 2006) was a Sierra Leonean academic and author, known for writing the lyrics to the Sierra Leone National Anthem. Early life Clifford Nelson Fyle was born and raised in Freetown, British Sierra Leone to Creole parents. He attended Methodist Boys High School in Freetown, and Fourah Bay College, which was then an accredited college of the University of Durham. Fyle obtained a Bachelor's degree in Languages and Mathematics aged 20, before spending the next few years teaching at his former High School. He later continued his education in Durham proper, studying English at Hatfield College. He returned to Sierra Leone after his graduation in 1960. John Akar
John Joseph Akar (1927–1975) was a Sierra Leonean entertainer, writer, and diplomat. He served as Sierra Leonean ambassador to the United States. Today, he is probably best known for composing the music of Sierra Leone's National Anthem. Early life Akar was born in the small town of Rotifunk, Moyamba District in the Southern Province of British Sierra Leone, to an ethnic Sherbro mother and to a Lebanese father. Akar attended the E.U.B. primary school in Rotifunk, and proceeded to Albert Academy secondary school in Freetown. After he completed his secondary education, he moved to the United States. Career In 1960, Akar became the first non- Creole and the first Sherbro to be appointed Director of Broadcasting of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Services (SLBS). In 1963, Akar founded the National Dance Troupe to encourage Sierra Leoneans to have pride in their cultural heritage.
