Sidnaw is an Unincorporated area, unincorporated community in southern Houghton County, Michigan, Houghton County, Michigan, United States. Sidnaw is located in Duncan Township, Michigan, Duncan Township along M-28 (Michigan highway), M-28, southwest of L'Anse, Michigan, L'Anse. History Sidnaw was founded by lumber companies harvesting Pinus strobus, white pine in the area. The community was first platted by Thomas Nester in 1889. Sidnaw had a station on the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway. A post office opened in Sidnaw on December 7, 1889; George Garland was the first postmaster. The community's name is derived from an Indigenous peoples of the Americas, American Indian word meaning "small hill by a creek". The Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway (DSS&A) was an American railroad serving the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the Lake Superior shoreline of Wisconsin. It provided service from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and St. Ignace, Michigan, westward through Marquette, Michigan to Superior, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota. A branchline stretched northward from Nestoria, Michigan up to the Keweenaw Peninsula and terminating at Houghton, Michigan, with two branches extending further to Calumet, Michigan and Lake Linden, Michigan. The first predecessor of the DSS&A began operations in 1855.
