Sidi Okba Mosque
Sidi Okba Mosque ( ar, مسجد سيدي عقبة, ''Masjid Sīdī ʻUqbah'') is the oldest surviving mosque in Algeria. The mosque was first established as the mausoleum in 686 dedicated to ʻUqbah ibn Nāfiʻ, a Companion of the Prophet and one of the prominent commanders of the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb. The mosque has witnessed many renovations since then. Location The mosque is located in the locality of Sidi Okba, 6 km south of the town of Tabuda and 10 km west of the city of Biskra, on the National road number 38 toward the locality of Khenguet Sidi Nadjil. History ʻUqbah ibn Nāfiʻ, on his return from the victorious Battle of Vescera in the Atlas Mountains, was killed by the army of the Berber Christian king Kusayla ibn Lamzah in an ambush outside the town of Thouda in 683. Sidi Okba
Sidi Okba ( ar, سيدي عقبة) is a commune in the Biskra Province, Algeria. It was named after the Muslim General Uqba ibn Nafi who died there in 683 AD. The nearest big city is Biskra which is located 18 km away. Sidi Okba sits on an oasis. In 1911 it was described by Baedeker as "the religious center of the Zab". Baedeker stated that the town founded by pilgrims visiting the tomb of Sidi Okba who died in a nearby town called Thouda. Zuhayr Ibn Qays
Zuhayr ibn Qays al-Balawī () (died 688) was a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and an Arab commander who fought in the service of the Rashidun, Umayyad and Zubayrid caliphs. He played a key role in the early Muslim conquests of Egypt, Barqa (Cyrenaica) and Ifriqiya. When the latter province fell to a Byzantine– Berber alliance in 682, Zuhayr was given command of the army to restore Arab rule. During that campaign, he temporarily retook Kairouan, the Arabs' capital in Ifriqiya, and killed the Berber chief Kasila, but was slain by Byzantine raiders on his way back to Barqa. Life Zuhayr belonged to the Bali tribe, itself part of the larger Quda'a confederation that was present throughout Syria and the northern Hejaz.Khoury 2002, p. 559.
