Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Indies release rock, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae, hip hop, and world music. Music appearing on indie labels is often referred to as indie music, or more specifically by genre, such as indie hip-hop. Stars Of Track And Field
Stars of Track and Field was a three-piece indie rock band from Portland, Oregon that was active from 2003 to 2011. They were named after the song "The Stars of Track and Field" by Belle and Sebastian, from the 1996 album ''If You're Feeling Sinister''. The band released their third album, ''Centuries Before Love and War'', to the iTunes Store in August 2006 and released a physical copy in January 2007. Several tracks from the album are available on the group's MySpace page. The band was joined by former AC/DC drummer Chris Slade on the DirecTV game show ''Rock and a Hard Place'', hosted by Meat Loaf in which they faced country group Lonestar. In Fall 2009, they toured with Lights. Their last album, ''A Time for Lions'', was released in September 2009, with the first single being "Racing Lights". The Beautiful Mistake
The Beautiful Mistake is a rock band from San Diego, California. Formed in 2000, the band has released two full-length albums: the 2002 debut album, ''Light A Match, For I Deserve To Burn'', and 2004's ''This Is Who You Are''. They have also released four EPs and had various songs featured on different compilation albums. Formed by Josh Hagquist and Shawn Grover following the breakup of their previous band, Ember, the band went through numerous member changes throughout the 2000's with Hagquist (vocals–guitar) remaining the constant in each incarnation. The Beautiful Mistake released albums on SideCho Records, The Militia Group and Reignition Records and had songs and videos featured on releases by Victory Records and Hopeless Records. Andrew Robert Nielsen (born October 6, 1982), known professionally as MC Lars, is an American record producer, rapper, cartoonist, podcaster and educator. Lars is one of the self-proclaimed originators of "lit-hop", and is the founder and CEO of the independent record label Horris Records. Lars has been cited as the creator of the term " iGeneration", which he was credited with doing in 2003. Education Lars attended Stevenson School, a high school in Pebble Beach, California. For college and graduate school, he attended Stanford University and Oxford University. Career He has recorded for Truck Records in the UK, Sidecho Records in the United States, Big Mouth Records in Japan, and Shock Records in Australia. The Silent Years
The Silent Years are an experimental Pop/Rock project from the Detroit Metropolitan Area. The band is known for combining atmospheric layers of sound and poetic lyrics with popular songwriting sensibilities. Its members are Josh Epstein, Fabian Halabou, Ryan Clancy, Cassandra Verras and Michael Majewski. History The Silent Years were formed in 2005 when singer/songwriter Josh Epstein recruited childhood friends Patrick Michalak, Ryan Trager and Jeremy Edwards to work on recording a demo for Lava Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. Via Audio is an American indie pop band from Brooklyn, New York. Their first full-length album '' Say Something'', was released in 2007 by Sidecho Records, to positive reviews from prominent independent music publications such as ''Pitchfork Media'', ''Alternative Press'', ''Spin Magazine'', & ''Tiny Mix Tapes''. The band met while attending college at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, later moving to Brooklyn, New York. They released their second full-length album titled ''Animalore'' on Undertow Music on March 9, 2010; it was produced by Spoon's Jim Eno. Blinded Black
Blinded Black is a five-piece post-hardcore band from St. Louis, Missouri. After forming in 1999 as a six-piece, the group self-released their debut album and began touring both locally and around the Midwest. The group signed with SideCho Records and began working with producer Marc McClusky. Their latest album, ''Under the Sunrise'', was released February 27, 2007 on SideCho Records; following its release the band toured with LoveHateHero and Vanna. Blinded Black called it quits in March 2008. The band had a small farewell tour in Indiana and Missouri from May 16–30, with their last show being in Missouri on May 30, 2008. Tokyo Rose (band)
Tokyo Rose is an indie rock band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. As of 2007 they have released 3 studio albums, and a short demo EP, whilst extensively changing their lineup over their 7 years of activity. History Tokyo Rose was formed in 1999 by Mike Glita, former bassist of Senses Fail, and Matt Reilly, formerly of The Finals. Soon after going through several line up changes, Ryan Dominguez became the new singer/frontman of the band. This marked the fruition of what eventually became what Tokyo Rose is today. In the summer of 2001, Reilly parted ways with the band, while Glita, the drummer of Tokyo Rose at the time, and Ryan Dominguez (vocals, guitar) enlisted Chris Poulsen (bass), formerly of Professor Plum, and headed into the studio to record their debut EP "Chasing Fireflies."
