Sid Griffin
Albert Sidney "Sid" Griffin (born September 18, 1955) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist-mandolinist, bandleader, and author who lives in London, England. He led the Long Ryders band in the 1980s, founded the Coal Porters group in the 1990s, has recorded several solo albums and is the author of volumes on Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons and bluegrass music. Early life Griffin was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He is an eighth-generation Kentuckian. After graduating from Ballard High School in eastern Louisville and playing in a band called The Frosties, Griffin attended the University of South Carolina, receiving a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1977. He then moved to Los Angeles, California, to launch a career as a musician. Career He briefly played in the punk band Death Wish before joining Shelley Ganz to form the Unclaimed in 1979. ''Final Wild Songs'' is a four-CD compilation box set by American band the Long Ryders, released in 2016 by Cherry Red Records. It collects the debut EP ''10-5-60'', the three studio albums '' Native Sons'', '' State of Our Union'' and ''Two-Fisted Tales'', as well as a number of rare and unreleased tracks, including a full 1985 live set recorded for radio broadcast in the Netherlands. The collection was researched and compiled by the Long Ryders' Tom Stevens and Sid Griffin and remastered from original master tapes, where available. Cherry Red Records is a British independent record label founded in Malvern, Worcestershire by Iain McNay in 1978. The label has released recordings by Dead Kennedys, Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set, and Felt, among others, as well as the compilation album ''Pillows & Prayers''. It was their last studio album for 32 years until 2019's '' Psychedelic Country Soul''. The album yielded two singles, a cover of NRBQ’s " I Want You Bad" and "Gunslinger Man". Frontier Records is an independent record label, started in 1980 in Sun Valley, Los Angeles by Lisa Fancher, a former employee of Bomp! Records and writer of the liner notes for the first album by The Runaways. History Frontier Records first found success with the release of the Circle Jerks album ''Group Sex''. The label went on to put out records by such bands as Suicidal Tendencies, American Music Club, Heatmiser, Redd Kross, Thin White Rope, T.S.O.L., Christian Death, and the Young Fresh Fellows, among others. On November 7, 2010, Frontier Records hosted a party for their 30th anniversary at the Echoplex in Los Angeles which featured a reunion by seminal punk band Middle Class, their first performance in nearly 30 years. Tom Stevens (musician)
Thomas Howard Stevens (September 17, 1956 – January 23, 2021) was an American bassist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, often associated with the Paisley Underground and alternative country movements as bassist for roots rock band the Long Ryders. He was a member of Magi and Danny & Dusty, and recorded as a solo artist. In his solo work, Stevens incorporated elements of folk rock, country, psychedelia and garage rock into his music, and released what music reviewer Stewart Lee calls "fascinatingly different solo albums." Stevens was based in Los Angeles in the 1980s, but later returned to his native Indiana. Early life Stevens was born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana and started playing music at age nine in various garage and hard rock bands in the 1960s and 1970s. Background and musical style The Long Ryders had funded the recording sessions for ''10-5-60'' themselves and managed to secure a deal with the import and distribution label Jem Records. Jem agreed to take on distribution and release the EP on their sublabel PVC in late 1983. Gregory Michael Sowders (born March 17, 1960) is an American drummer and music publisher. He is a founding member of alternative country and Paisley Underground band the Long Ryders, and Senior Vice President and Head of A&R at Warner Chappell Music in the United States. Early life Sowders grew up in Los Angeles and studied history at UCLA. As a child, his parents took him to his first concert with Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and the Everly Brothers. "When I heard that beat, I knew I wanted to play the drums," Sowders said in 2017.
