, commonly called , is Japan's oldest film magazine and began publication in July 1919. It was first published three times a month, using the Japanese ''Jun'' (旬) system of dividing months into three parts, but the postwar ''Kinema Junpō'' has been published twice a month. The magazine was founded by a group of four students, including Saburō Tanaka, at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Technical High School at the time). In that first month, it was published three times on days with a "1" in them. These first three issues were printed on art paper and had four pages each. The major Japanese film studio Nikkatsu began to experiment with erotic-themed movies beginning in the late 1960s in an attempt to save the company from insolvency. ''Cruel Female Love Suicide'' continued this trend which eventually resulted in the inauguration of Nikkatsu's ''Roman porno'' series of films in November 1971 with Apartment Wife: Affair In the Afternoon, also directed by Shōgorō Nishimura. Plot Chie (Sanae Ōhori), newly arrived in Tokyo, saves her friend from school, Mari (played by the half-Indian actress Annu Mari), from a suicide attempt. Synopsis Saori is the wealthy, unfaithful wife of the impotent Kosaku. When she returns from a trip abroad, Tsumura, Kosaku's assistant, meets her and takes Saori to an apartment. There Tsumura rapes her and submits her to various sexual tortures while she is photographed by photo-journalist Tayama. Her husband, Kosaku uses the photographs to blackmail Saori into giving him control of the family estate. Saori is returned to her mansion, but kept in a cage in the basement where she is subjected to regular bouts of abuse from Tsumura. Kanako's husband, Eiichirō, is suspicious about her activities. After hiring a private detective and learning about her perverse hobbies, Eiichirō throws Kanako into a landfill.
