Shropshire Wanderers F.C.
Shropshire Wanderers F.C. was an amateur association football club based in Shrewsbury, England. The club was active during the 1870s and once reached the FA Cup semi-finals. History The club was founded out of the Shropshire Wanderers cricket club. It entered the FA Cup competition in each of the years from 1873–74 to 1877–78. Its greatest success came in 1874–75, when it reached the semi-finals. In the second round the club conceded a late equalizer to the Civil Service F.C. at the Kennington Oval, but the Service scratched from the replay, being unable to travel to Shrewsbury. The only match the club won in the tournament - and the only one the club would ever win in the Cup - was a replay win against Woodford Wells. The initial tie (at the Kennington Oval) ended 1–1, even after the sides played an optional 15 minutes of extra-time. Monkmoor is a suburb located in the north-east of the town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. It is connected to the suburbs of Underdale and Abbey Foregate. The ward's population in 2015 was 4,451. The Sheffield and Hallamshire Football Association is a County Football Association in England. It was formed in Sheffield in 1867 as the Sheffield Football Association, and is the second-oldest football governing body after the Football Association (FA). Its teams adopted the Sheffield Rules of football until 1878, when they were merged with the FA's rules. Its members include the two oldest football clubs in the world, Sheffield and Hallam. The Football Association (also known as The FA) is the governing body of association football in England and the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. John Wylie (footballer, Born 1854)
John George Wylie (5 October 1854 – 30 July 1924) was an English amateur footballer who played as a forward. He won the FA Cup with Wanderers in 1878 and played once for England in 1878. He also took part as an athlete, winning the Pentathlon at the National Olympian Games in 1879. Career Wylie was born in Shrewsbury and was educated at Shrewsbury School between 1869 and 1872. After leaving school he moved to Sheffield where he trained as a solicitor. He qualified in 1878 after which he joined a practice in London. In 1881, he was living in Putney. He died, aged 69, in Wandsworth, London. Football career His early football was played with Shropshire Wanderers, before moving to Sheffield where he earned representative honours for the city of Sheffield. David Thomson (footballer, Born 1847)
David Thomson (baptized 5 November 1847Published under Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians. – 14 September 1876) was an England-born Welsh amateur footballer who helped found the Druids club and played for Wales in their first international match. He has been described as "one of the pioneers of Welsh football". Early life and family Thomson was born in Dudley in Staffordshire, England, and baptized at nearby Halesowen in Worcestershire. He moved across the border into Wales as a child when his family settled in the area of Ruabon, Denbighshire, together with his younger brother George. Thomson enlisted in the Royal Denbighshire Militia, reaching the rank of captain. Thomson was also an excellent cricketer with Wynnstay C.C. He was also a county cricketer for Staffordshire and, between 1871 and 1875, for Shropshire while playing for Hawkstone C.C.
