Shriekback Albums
Shriekback are an English rock band formed in 1981 in Kentish Town by Barry Andrews, formerly of XTC and the League of Gentlemen (keyboards/synthesizers/vocals), and Dave Allen, formerly of Gang of Four (bass), with Carl Marsh, formerly of Out on Blue Six (guitars/vocals) soon added to the line-up. They were joined by Martyn Barker on drums in 1983. Their early music was a funk-influenced version of new wave and post-punk, later moving towards art rock and always featuring "insidiously weird vocals". Kentish Town
Kentish Town is an area of northwest London, England in the London Borough of Camden, immediately north of Camden Town. Less than four miles north of central London, Kentish Town has good transport connections and is situated close to the open spaces of Hampstead Heath. Toponymy The name of Kentish Town is probably derived from ''Ken-ditch'' or ''Caen-ditch'', meaning the "bed of a waterway" and is otherwise unrelated to the English county of Kent. In researching the meaning of ''Ken-ditch'', it has also been noted that ''ken'' is the Celtic word for both "green" and "river", while ''ditch'' refers to the River Fleet, now a subterranean river. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and DIY ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the production techniques of dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, cinema and literature. These communities produced independent record labels, visual art, multimedia performances and fanzines. Go Bang!
''Go Bang!'' is the sixth studio album by Shriekback, released in 1988. It produced a significant number of ''Billboard'' modern rock hits, including "Get Down Tonight," "Intoxication," and "Shark Walk". Released after the departure of founding member and bassist, Dave Allen, the album revolves around Barry Andrews. The band was under considerable pressure from Island Records to produce a hit from this album and British hitmaker Richard James Burgess was brought in to produce and mix the album. The album is significantly more commercial than the previous or subsequent albums and this caused some tension in the studio. However, it produced the necessary hits, including lead single "Intoxication", which peaked at #6 on the newly introduced Modern Rock Tracks chart. "Get Down Tonight", a cover of the KC and the Sunshine Band track, spent 6 weeks in the Billboard Dance/Club chart, peaking at #20. The Elastic Purejoy
The Elastic Purejoy was an alternative rock group active in the mid 1990s and led by English bassist-singer Dave Allen. Their work was released on Allen's World Domination Recordings. Their sound can be characterized as bass-driven, progressive indie rock and pop, with lyrics often inspired by major literary writers of the 20th Century. After their first release, Allen's name appeared more prominently on the records' packaging as if they were solo releases rather than a band. King Swamp
King Swamp was a British rock band, consisting of Walter Wray (vocals), Dave Allen (bass), Steve Halliwell (keyboards), Dominic Miller (guitar), and Martyn Barker (drums). The band was formed in 1988 in London, after Allen and Barker had parted ways with Shriekback and recruited Wray as frontman. Halliwell and Mike Cozzi (featured on the second album) were also ex-Shriekback members. King Swamp's self titled first album in 1989 had some success with the single, "Is This Love?" which reached number 21 on the ''Billboard'' Album Rock chart. The band released Wiseblood in 1990. Guitarist Dominic Miller was replaced by Nick Lashley and Mike Cozzi on the second album. Wiseblood failed to chart in the USA or the U.K. and was panned by critics and ultimately led to the band dissolving. The Official Albums Chart is a list of albums ranked by physical and digital sales and (from March 2015) audio streaming in the United Kingdom. It was published for the first time on 22 July 1956 and is compiled every week by the Official Charts Company (OCC) on Fridays (previously Sundays). It is broadcast on BBC Radio 1 (top 5) and found on the OCC website as a Top 100 or on UKChartsPlus as a Top 200, with positions continuing until all sales have been tracked in data only available to industry insiders. However, even though number 100 was classed as a hit album (as in the case of The Guinness Book of British Hit Albums) in the 1980s until January 1989, since the compilations were removed this definition was changed to Top 75 with follow-up books such as The Virgin Book of British Hit Albums book only including this data. ''Jam Science'' is the third studio album by English pop group Shriekback. It was released in two versions in 1984 and was reissued on CD in a two-disc special release from the band themselves in 2014, the second disc being a live show at Hatfield. The first edition, issued on Y Records in early 1984, was the final release by the label.
