Shotton, Northumberland
Kilham is a hamlet and civil parish in the English county of Northumberland, located west of Wooler, east of Kelso, south west of Berwick-upon-Tweed and north west of Morpeth. It lies on the northern edge of the Northumberland National Park in Bowmont Valley Northumberland. The hamlet, which consists of a small group of agricultural dwellings, is overlooked by Kilham Hill and the northern limits of the Cheviot Hills. Shotton Colliery is a village in County Durham, England, situated north west of Peterlee. The two villages in the parish of Shotton are Old Shotton, a small village southeast of the main village, now merged into the town of Peterlee. History Old Shotton can be traced back as far as 900 AD, when it was known as Scitton, which in Old English means 'of the Scots', The village name was first recorded in 1165 as 'Sottun'. By the 16th century, when Easington was under the control of Prince Bishops, the village had become known as Shotton. In 1756, the Brandlings built Shotton Hall and through marriage this eventually passed to the Burdon family. The Colliery In 1833, the Haswell Coal Company began to sink a colliery to the west of Old Shotton, near Shotton Grange Farm. This pit began producing coal the following year and the village of Shotton Colliery soon started to develop. Shotton is a town and community in Flintshire, Wales, within the Deeside conurbation along the River Dee, joined with Connah's Quay, near the border with England. It is located 5 miles (8 km) west of Chester and can be reached by road from the A548. In the 2011 census Shotton had a population of 6,663. The Ordnance Survey Grid Reference is SJ305685. Etymologies The town's name is first recorded in Old English as ''Cyllingas''. This name derives from the Welsh language word Celyn (meaning Holly) and has persisted in one form or another throughout the town's history. By 1822 Richard Willett recorded the name as ''Kyllins'', which he says contains "one of the parish's most notable ancient houses". Even today, ''Killin's Farm'' and ''Killin's Lane'' may still be found in the oldest part of town. The town's modern English name is shared with three other towns in Britain. Shotton railway station serves the towns of Shotton and Connah's Quay, Flintshire, Wales. It is situated where the Borderlands Line crosses the North Wales Coast Line. All passenger services are operated by Transport for Wales, which manages the station. Shotton is split into two sections: Shotton High Level is above street level and serves the Borderlands Line; Shotton Low Level serves the North Wales Coast Line. Each level has two side platforms and both are double tracked. The tracks of the high and low levels cross each other at right angles. There is a ticket office on the high level Bidston-bound platform. The station is staffed on weekdays and Saturday mornings only. History The town gained its first railway as early as 1848 with the opening of the Chester and Holyhead Railway, but the railway company did not provide a station to serve it.
