Shoby is a Hamlet (place), hamlet and former civil parish north east of Leicester, now in the parish of Grimston, Leicestershire, Grimston, in the Borough of Melton, Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. In 2000 it had an estimated population of 39. In 1931 the parish had a population of 49. Gregory Brokesby who was a resident of Shoby became the Sheriff of Leicestershire in 1632. History The name "Shoby" means 'Sigvald's farm/settlement'. Shoby was recorded in the Domesday Book as ''Seoldesberie''. Shoby is a deserted medieval village, it was deserted between 1350 and 1400 because of the Black Death or retreat from marginal lands. Shoby had a priory, a building is now on the site, which was formerly Priory Farmhouse and now called "Shoby Priory" and is a Grade II listed building. Shoby was an extra-parochial area, in 1858 it became a civil parish, on 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished and merged with Grimston. References External links

Grimston, Leicestershire
Grimston is a village and civil parish in the Melton (borough), Melton district, in the English county of Leicestershire. The parish includes the village of Saxelbye and the hamlet of Shoby. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 294. On 1 April 1936 the parishes of Saxelby and Shoby were merged with Grimston. Although the current civil parish is called "Grimston" its parish council is called "Grimston, Saxelbye and Shoby Parish Council". The village's name means 'farm/settlement of Grimr'. Amenities Grimston has a pub, a place of worship and once had a railway station called Grimston railway station. The 13th-century parish church of St Peter, restored in 1856, is a Grade II* listed building. References External links
