Shirley Stott Despoja
Shirley Margaret Stott Despoja (born 1936) is an Australian journalist. She was the first female journalist in the general newsroom of '' The Advertiser'' newspaper in Adelaide, and was the paper's first arts editor. Biography Born Shirley Margaret Stott to a working-class family in Sydney, she studied at St George Girls High School before commencing, but not completing, an art's degree. Stott left university without a degree after offered a journalism role at ''The Anglican'', a newspaper published by the Anglican Church of Australia, working for editor Francis James. With limited career prospects in Sydney, Stott moved to ''The Canberra Times'', and then later was offered a position at '' The Advertiser'' in Adelaide—she was the first woman to work on general news for the paper, instead of the "women's pages". A bracket is either of two tall fore- or back-facing punctuation marks commonly used to isolate a segment of text or data from its surroundings. ''The Adelaide Review'' (AR) was a monthly print arts magazine and dynamic website in Adelaide, South Australia. It was first published in 1984, but gained standing after one of its writers, Christopher Pearson, took it over in 1985. In March 2019, it was one of only two "broad-spectrum non-Murdoch print media" publications in Adelaide, the other one being ''SA Life''. Its 488th and final issue was published in print and online on 1 October 2020. Australian Democrats
The Australian Democrats is a centrist political party in Australia. Founded in 1977 from a merger of the Australia Party and the New Liberal Movement, both of which were descended from Liberal Party dissenting splinter groups, it was Australia's largest minor party from its formation in 1977 through to 2004 and frequently held the balance of power in the Senate during that time. The Democrats' inaugural leader was Don Chipp, a former Liberal cabinet minister, who famously promised to "keep the bastards honest". At the 1977 federal election, the Democrats polled 11.1 percent of the Senate vote and secured two seats. The party would retain a presence in the Senate for the next 30 years, at its peak (between 1999 and 2002) holding nine out of 76 seats, though never securing a seat in the lower house. Medal Of The Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Before the establishment of the order, Australian citizens received British honours. The Monarch of Australia is sovereign head of the order, while the Governor-General of Australia is the principal companion/dame/knight (as relevant at the time) and chancellor of the order.
